THE PUBLIC
WELFARE ?
Why do some families have sev
eral generations on welfare?
There are some hereditary men
tal or physical handicaps which
prevent people from supporting
themselves. Even where there is
no actual handicap, many families
on public assistance are hampered
by a serious lack of education. It
is often difficult for young people
in these famiUes to get through
school when there is very little
help or encouragement from adult
members of the family who have
not themselves learned the impor
tance of education.

THE EM PTY TOMB
The first day of the week cometh
Mary Magdalene early, when it
was yet dark, unto the sepulchre,
and seeth the stone taken away
from the sepulchre. Then she run
neth, and cometh to Simon Peter,
and to the other disciple, whom
Jesus loved, and saith unto them,
They have taken away the Lord
out of the sepulchre, and we know
not where they have laid him. Pet

Why aren't more people forced
to support aged parents?
The Law speUs out the required
contributions from legally respon
sible relatives to certain assistance
recipients. While all relatives are
encouraged to contribute toward
the support of their parents if they
are able to do so, they cannot be
forced to make a contribution un
less their income and the number
of people dependent upon it are
such that they would be able to
contribute without serious hard
ship.
Can couples who have had chil
dren of their own adopt more?
Yes, if they can provide a home
which will meet the needs of the
children who are available for ad
option.
Is it true the least experienced
caseworkers sometimes have the
biggest caseloads?
Yes, because cases involving
people with serious emotional prob
lems require a great deal of case
work skill and are usually assigned
to the smallest caseloads where the
caseworker can give them individ
ual attention. Cases where only fi
nancial assistance is needed are
usually assigned to larger case
loads, which may be handled by
less experienced caseworkers.
Why do you support illegitimate
children on ADC? Aren't there
married couples ready and willing
to adopt them?
Even if enough adoptive parents
were available to care for all these
children, the purpose of the Aid to
Dependent Children program is to
enable children to remain with
their families when the families
want to keep them, but lack the
means to support them. According
to law, an unmarried mother has
the right to choose between relin
quishing her baby for adoption, or
reciving Aid to Dependent Children
to enable her to keep the child.
The EUB Circle held its regular
monthly meeting in the church
Wednesday, March 15. The host
esses, Marie Christensen and Ma
bel Graves, served a very attrac
tive dessert luncheon, using the
St. Patrick’s Day theme. Green
was carried out in both food and
table decorations.
Several guests were present in
cluding Mrs. Harry Junken from
Hillsboro; Mrs. Clive Toothaker
from Cornelius; Mrs. Judd Green-
man from Medford, all former
residents and members. Mrs. Edith
Markham and Mrs. Nelle Davis
were also guests but added their
names to the Circle membership
role. The president Mrs. Leah
Stiff warmly greeted the guests.
Reverend Targgart was also a vis
itor and gave a short talk on pray
er. Blanche DeWitt gave the devo
tions.
The next meeting, April 19, will
be an all day meeting with a pot
luck luncheon at 12:30 p.m. The
purpose is to prepare articles for
rummage sale. Hostesses will be
Lona Weidman and Lena May.
Martha Enevoldsen will have the
devotions.
At the March 9 CWF meeting it
was decided that the next regular
meeting, which is today, March 23,
be an all day work day with sack
lunches brought by each person.
Regular reports were given and
the devotion was given by Mrs.
Olivia Wood.
