' Â Church Program BIRKENFELD — On Christmas day the Shetler family drove to Dayton, Oregon to the home of her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Roth for a get to-gether. Other relatives there were Mr. and Mrs. David Roth and family of Winston, Ore­ gon and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Roth and family of Roseburg. Monday the Shetler home was the scene of a gathering of 37 relatives of Mr. Shetler. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Reeder and family of Seat­ tle, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Shetler and family of Ariel, Wash., Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shetler and family of Scotts Mill and Mr. and Mrs. Mar­ vin Shetler of Silverton. Mrs. Tom Hopkins retu r n e d home from the hospital last Tues­ day. She is feeling much improv­ ed but will be convalescing for some time yet. Her sister, Miss Hazel Cook of Portland, is staying with her. Mrs. Ann Lonnquist and family of Eugene spent Christmas week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lonnquist. Eve, Scott and Luke are staying on until New Years. The December 21 meeting of the EUB Circle began with a Christ­ mas party at which gifts were ex­ changed and a delicious luncheon enjoyed by the 20 members pres­ ent. Blanche DeWitt gave the in­ vocation. The hostesses for the day were Lona Weidman, Hazel Berg- erson and Leta Whiteman. President Leah Stiff called the meeting to order and Lois Johnson gave the opening prayer. The devotions were given by Maudeleen Murray. She read a story entitled “Why Can’t It Be Christmas Every Day?” She also read a poem and gave a short prayer. A short business meeting was held before the officers for 1967 were elected. The group re-elected Leah Stiff as president, Leta White man as vice president and Louise Thomas as treasurer. Lois John­ son was elected as the new secre­ tary. Thursday evening the young folks went caroling and later stopped at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Hansen for refreshments. Those at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Johnston on Christ­ mas eve were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Lousignont, Pam and Terry, Mrs. Ada Humble, Mrs. Orene Ashe, and Buster Benson and family. On Christmas day the Johnstons were dinner guests at the Sam Lousig­ nont home. The 4-H club will start having their meetings this Thursday eve­ ning at 7:30 p.m. at the home of their leader, Bob DuPuis. Mrs. Fred Larson had a birthday dinner for Fred Monday evening. Other guests were Al Berg and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Larson. Erickson, district director of the Internal Revenue for Oregon, has announced the period for fil­ ing 1966 federal income tax returns will extend from January 3 through April 17, 1967. To provide assis­ tance to taxpayers, the Portland office, 319 S. W. Pine Street (Telephone 222-3801), will provide information service Monday thro­ ugh Friday, from January 3 thro­ ugh April 17, during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Director Erickson stated, “Tax­ payers coming in for help will be asked to fill out as much of their returns as possible, and will be given any additional information needed to complete them.” He sug­ gested taxpayers telephone for in­ formation before going to an inter­ nal revenue service office, since essentially the same service is available by telephone as at the offices. • While a snowstorm may be rag­ ing at the rim of the Grand Can­ yon, 7,000 feet below, the tempera­ ture may be in the 50s.
