Vernonia Eagle, July 28, 1966
ACTUALLY, the first drug store in
Vernonia was the one maintained by
Dr. C. W. Newth, first doctor, in con
nection with his office. However, the
first regular drug store was that of
L. B. "Doc” Stewart who is pictured
below in front of his store (he is in
center) which stood about where the
Enco station is now. His store also at
one time was where Dean’s parking
lot is now. As near as can be de
termined, he opened his store about
1902 or 3 and it was operated here
until about 1918. One thing those
who patronized his store remember
is his stock reply to requests for
merchandise he did not have: “No,
but I have something just a little
bit betta.”
