    Community Club
Plans for Prom
JEWELL
—The Community
club met last Thursday at the
home of Mrs. Slanger. They have
been very busy the past week
planning for the high school prom,
which will be April 30. A prince
and princess will be chosen from
the student body since there are
no seniors to be queen and king.
The prom will be held in the Ne­
halem Valley Grange hall. The
music will be provided by the No­
mads, a group from Portland.
The Community club has also
been planning for the rowboat
race. It will be May 7, starting at
9 a.m.
Susan Smith spent the week end
in Seaside with relatives.
Merle a-nd Hilda Tiedeman of
Creswell, spent several days in
the valley visiting friends this
week. The Tiedemans are former
residents of Jewell.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Larsen visit­
ed with Mrs. Larsen’s parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Francis Nordstrom, of
Birkenfeld, over the week end.
The Jewell Gmage met last
Monday evening. Lee Wooden, rep­
resentative of the state safety com­
mission, gave a talk on safety and
the slow moving driver. M. M.
Samuelson, was appointed by the
master to represent Jewell Grange
in the county safety program.
Jill Jepson, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Jepson, enrolled in
the first grade at Jewell. She for­
merly attended Delake g r a d e
school in Lincoln City.
A community chairman 4-H
meeting was held Saturday in the
fair building in Astoria. Mrs. Fred
Slanger represented the Jewell
area.
The Jewell grade school boys
played a softball game Friday af­
ternoon, April 22 against Westport.
Jewell won 15-14.
The Jewell high school girls
traveled to Knappa Thursday, Ap­
ril 21 to play softball, only to be
defeated.
One good thing about a dull party

Dad's Illness Prompts
Trip to Pennsylvania

mand returned home Sunday after
spending a month with her father,

Pennsylvania due to his illness.

of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McKee and
Irvin and John stayed with their
aunt, Mrs. Richard Goodman.

Mr. and Mrs. Myrt Jenkins and
Mr. and Mrs. Claude Norris of
Portland. Week end visitor was
their son, Jewell Lloyd of Auburn,
Washington.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Parker and
Mrs. Marie Christensen attended
the Historical Society meeting at
Deer Island Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Myrt Jenkins of
Portland visited his twin sister and
brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bud
Rose, on Sunday.
Local Church
Dates Chorale
Saturday evening, April 30, the
Northwest Christian College Chor­
ale will be presenting a musical
program at the First Christian
church. The program will begin at
7:30 p.m. and will feature the best
in sacred music.
The chorale is composed of
twelve select voices from a larger
hundred-voice college choir. It is
under the direction of Dr. Gilbert
Kistler. The whole family would
enjoy this free and inspiring eve­
ning.
Besides the chorale, the college
has traveling quartets and trios.
The Christian church will be host
to the N.C.C. Trio at the morning
worship hour on May 15.
Sunday evening, May 1, a film

Garlock were in Portland Satur­
day evening celebrating their wed­
ding anniversary. While there they
went to Vancouver Memorial hos­
pital in Vancouver to visit her
brother-in-law, Roy Totten, who
had recently undergone back sur­
gery.

home Sunday afternoon were Mr.

land. The Larsons and their child­
ren held the worship services at
Birkenfeld and Mist churches. A
large crowd attended the Mist ser­
vices.

Mathews Visit
With Daughter
MIST—Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Mathews returned Sunday from a
16-day trip through ten states.
They ate Easter breakfast in St.
Paul, Minnesota, visited relatives
in Des Moines, spent several days
on the Graceland campus with
their daughter Marian and attend­
ed their church conference in In­
dependence, Missouri for a week.
Graceland college had its spring
vacation during that week and
many from there attended the con­
ference. Weatherwise they exper­
ienced snow, sunshine, rain, hail
and were in Independence when
the tornado struck.
The Mist-Birkenfeld Missionary
ladies will meet May 4, the first
Wednesday, up Fishhawk wih
Mrs. Lola Watson. The regular
meeting conflicted with the Home­
makers Fesival a St. Helens,
May 11, so had to be set up one
week.
Mr. and Mrs. George Mathews
were in Hillsboro during the week.
Mrs. Lloyd Garlock was hostess
Tuesday for a Stanley party with
Mrs. Viola Ryckman, Clatskanie
as demonstrator.
