Special Events
O e r tto n ia E a g l e
THURSDAY, JANUARY 27. 1966
The Christian church will observe
Sunset Heights Day Sunday. Dr.
Clark Aydelott, former head chap
lain of the Los Angeles county hos
pital, will be the guest speaker
at the morning worship hour. He
is now minister of the Parkrose
Christian church in Portland. Mr.
Sargent, the local pastor, will be
speaking in the Parkrose church.
This special Sunday is being ob
served by many Christian church
es and Churches of Christ in the
Portland area in order to pay off
a $3,000 property debt of the new
ly formed church located several
miles west of Portland on the Sun
set highway. A special offering will
be taken by the local church for
this purpose.
The guest speaker has had the
distinction of being head chaplain
of the of the largest hospitals in
the world as well as having one of
the longest hospital chaplaincies
among Christian churches. Two of
his sons are ministers
Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. the
local Sunday school will be guest of
the North Plains Christian church
at a chicken dinner, the award
for a contest held by the two
schools in which the local church
was victorious. An abbreviated
church service will be held fol
lowing the dinnner. Howard Hut
chins is minister of the North
Plains church. Mrs. Ray Robert
son is superintendent of the local
Sunday school.
Witnesses Home
After Seminar
Jehovah’s Witnesses of the Ver
nonia congregation returned home
this week from a Bible conference
in Longview, Washington. The con
vention ended Sunday with a peak
attendance of 978.
The high attendance was reached
at the climax of the three-day sem
inar at the public lecture, “What
Does the Resurrection From the
Dead Mean to You and Yours?’’
given by Alvyn L. Franck, district
official from the World Headquart
ers of Jehovah’s Witnesses in
Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Franck
was quoted as saying, ‘‘The Bible
is unique in that it is the only
sacred book in existence that
teaches a resurrection of the dead.
The teachings of immortality of
the human soul and resurrection
contradict each other. Since one
of them must be false it is the
immortality of the human soul
teaching that finds no basis in the
scripture but is rooted in pagan
ism. The Bible teaches resurrec
tion of the dead.”
Another highlight of the confer
ence was the baptism and ordina
tion service at which 15 ministers
were added to the world wide Bi
ble teaching fellowship.
