THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1966 MOM & DAD U.S. Savings Stamps can help your children build cash-and character By Woodrow Moe QUESTION: I began receiving my reitrem ent benefits at 62 and when I was age 63 I became dis abled. I checked at my social se curity office and they told me that I could not get disability bene fits because I was receiving re tirement benefits. Has this been changed by the 1965 amendments? ANSWER: Yes. After receiving retirem ent benefits, it is now pos sible to change to disability bene fits if you become disabled be fore 65. This means that if you are already receiving a reduced benefit when you become disab led, your payments may be in creased. QUESTION: What benefits are payable under hospital insurance? ANSWER: Up to 90 days of hos pital care are provided for each spell of illness. You pay the first $40 and $10 daily after 60 days of hospitalization. You are also eligible for out-patient diagnostic services, post-hospital home health services and effective January 1, 1967, post-hospital extended care. QUESTION: I have read that my monthly widow’s benefits, if started a t 60, will be reduced. Will you explain this please? ANSWER: Any widow who files when she is 60 or 61 will have her monthly benefit reduced ac cording to the number of months she will receive benefits before 62. This reduction will be permanent. QUESTION: My aunt is 78 and has never worked under social se curity. Is there any way she can get coverage under Medicare? ANSWER: Yes. With few excep tions, everyone who will reach 65 before 1968 will be covered by the Medicare Law. Since your aunt is not receiving social security bene fits, however, she needs to apply What better way to teach your boys and girls the value of saving— and an apprecia tion of their country, too— than to have them set aside 10c or 25c a week for U.S. Savings Stamps.
