speak at the V ernonia church of the
N azarene T hursday evening a t 7:00
p m . Rev. and Mrs. H etrick w ere
first assigned to Africa in 1945, and
now a re on th eir third furlough
home.
Since th eir first assignm ent, Mr,
H etrick has been m issionary evan
gelist, Bible school principal, and is
cu rren tly the supervisor of the
church work in the Swazi-Zulu area,
with his h ead q u arters a t Endingeni,
Swaziland. He will show colored
slides of the w ork in Africa.
P rio r to assignm ent to A frica, H et
rick pastored churches in W areham ,
M ass.; and in Providence, Rhode Is
land. While on furlough, th e H etricks
m ake th eir hom e in N ashville, Ten
nessee.

“ We w ere m oving tow ard a heavy

saw about five m en hiding in a bush
about six feet aw ay,” said Young
quist, a platoon co m m ander in the
1st B attalion of th e 7th M arines.
“ I challenged them once in E ng
lish and once in Vietnam ese.
“They ra n tow ard a pine grove.
On com m and, m y m en opened up
and cut down two of them . That
started it. We began to receive fire
im m ediately, but we couldn’t tell
from where.
“ I sen t a fire team up to search
the bodies of the two m en we had cut
down. The m en searched one of the
bodies, then started tow ard the other
one. The ‘body’ rolled over and lob
bed a grenade. One of m y m en was
hit in the arm , another in the leg.
I t ’s fo rtu n ate they w eren’t killed.
They w ere both w earing flak jack
e ts .”
The fight lasted about 30 m inutes
W ednesday night.
It w as the platoon’s only contact
with the enem y since M arines and
South V ietnam ese launched th eir a s
sault Tuesday.
At d aybreak Thursday, the M arines
began th eir sweep back through the
sam e a re a .searching, probing and
blowing up caves.
M ajor G. H. G entry J r ., intelli
gence officer for th e 7th M arines,
said a wounded Viet Cong captured
in a cave w as a m edic. B efore the
prisoner died, G entry said, he told
intelligence officers he w as called
two weeks ago to work in a Viet
Cong field hospital. He said he had
helped tre a t m ore than 200 wounded
Viet Gong, ap p aren t casu alties in
