As PI Guides
Last Friday, boys from the Ver
nonia high school Future Farmers
of America chapter acted as guides
at the Pacific International livestock
show in Portland to conduct grade
school tours through the building.
They were furnished lunch in return
for their services.
Saturday morning, the local dairy
judging team, Ken Vealey, Curtis
Poetter and Les Forcier, competed
with 46 teams from Oregon, Idaho
and Washington and placed 22nd.
Competition in this field was very
keen and they were up against much
more experienced teams.
Saturday night, Ken Vealey took
part in the calf scramble. Twenty
boys entered and went into the are
na with 10 six-month old calves that
were untamed. Those who succeeded
in catching a calf, putting a halter
on it and leading it from the ring,
kept it. Ken was not one of the
lucky ones.

jury of Columbia county by Judge
Avery Combs. The grand jury will
serve until next May.

Judge Combs are Mrs. Anna Mae
Crawford, Rainier; Wayne Hinshaw,
St. Helens; Mrs. Celeste M. Tooley,
St. Helens; Helfred A. Peterson,

Organization of a state-wide ‘‘Wel
come to Oregon” committee has
been announced by Governor Mark
O. Hatfield, who said appointment
to the local area chairmanship has
been accepted by B. R. Pilger, man
ager, the United States National
Bank, Vernonia branch.
The term of service as chairman
will be for the remainder of this
year and 1966.
The non-profit organization pub
lishes a nationally-distributed “Ore
gon Travel Guide and Directory of
Accomodations” and conducts pri
vately-financed programs to promote
and improve the state’s commercial
services to vacationers and travel
ers.
Hatfield said more Oregonians
need to be aware of the impact of
the travel industry on the economy
of our state, and the role each citi
zen can play as a friendly and help
ful host to visitors in Oregon.
The ‘‘Welcome to Oregon” pro
gram was created by Governor Hat
field three years ago to supplement
the promotional efforts of the Ore
gon Highway Department’s travel
information division and to inspire
greater local community awareness
of the opportunities to build more lo
cal tourist business.
Ties of friendship slip the minute
