who reside here were at St. Helens

fer, Mrs. Justin Folken, Mrs. Harry
Culbertson, Mr. and Mrs. Harry San-
don, Mrs. Floyd Bush and Mr. and

CHEF BOY-AR-DEE
Funeral services were held here
Tuesday morning at the First Chris
tian church for Mrs. Vera Aldridge,
granddaughter of early valley pio
neers, who passed away early Sat
urday morning at Milwaukie follow
ing an extended illness.
Mrs. Aldridge was the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William Wood and was
bom on their homestead on Stoney
Point road, now the Ben Fowler
place, December 14, 1894. Her ma
ternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Saul Sheeley, had come to this area
in 1874 with the first settlers in this
part of the valley, and her father
homesteaded here shortly after that.
She attended local schools and Os
car Weed recalled this week that in
1911, the first year that the Vernonia
schools had more than one teacher,
he taught for two months at the open
ing of school until the man hired
for the position of principal arrived
and she was one of his pupils.
She lived most of her life in this
area and where-ever her home was
it was distinguished by the profusion
of flowers with which she had an un
usual “green thumb” nack.
She is survived by two sons, Elmo
Ira Aldridge of Eugene and Iral R.
Aldridge of Milwaukie and four
grandchildren. There also is a step
son, step-grandchildren and step-
greatgrandchildren. Also, among sur
vivors are four sisters, Mrs. Lida
Mills, Mrs. Doris Hillsbery and Mrs.
Gaynelle Reed, all of Vernonia, and
Mrs. Shirley Neilsen of Portland and
a brother, Newell Wood cf Vernonia.
Many nieces, nephews and cousins
also reside in this area .
The services at 11 a.m. Tuesday
were conducted by Rev. Herbert
Read of the Milwaukie Church of
Christ. Vault interment, was at the
Vernonia Memorial cemetery. The
Peake Funeral Home at Milwaukie
was in charge of arrangements.

Everett Skeans, Rainier, was elect
ed chairman of the Columbia county
Farm Forestry committee last Fri
day, succeeding Elmer Loyd, Deer
Island, who has served as chairman
for the past four years. Loyd was
elected to the vice-chairman position.
Don Coin Walrod, county extension
agent, serves as secretary.
Committee members set dates for
the tenth annual forestry field day
for all seventh grade students of the
county at their quarterly meeting,
considered management factors for
timber on Camp Wilkerson, and
made tentative arrangements for a
public tour to the Tillamook experi
mental forest area early in March.
The first monthly meeting of the
Vernonia Men’s Golf association was
called February 2 at the Vernonia
clubhouse by Richard D. Fletcher,
president.
The program dates for the 1965
events are being outlined. These
events include a spring handicap
tournament, home and home match
tournaments with St. Helens and
Seaside, ladies day picnic, Tuesday
evening plays and fall championship
flights.
The following committee chairmen
were named:
Tournament, Horace Hertel; lad
der beard, Loel Roberts; handicaps,
Wayne Thomas; club championship,

The golf course is in very fine
