Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hearing Sr. re­
turned home Sunday after a month
of vacationing in Eastern Oregon.
They spent one week at Wallowa
Lake with five other m er hers of
the Oregon Trailer club a- < three
weeks at Baker where they have
relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Thomas were
Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Turk at Cornelius. Mr.
Thomas’s sister, Mrs. Bertha Turk
was also there.

Mr. and Mrs. Wally Noakes and
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Barstad of
North Bonneville hunted last week
in the Wallowa mountains in Eastern
Oregon.
Mrs. Merle Cline and Mrs. Justin
Folken accompanied Mrs. Oscar
Hannula to Portland October 14 to
attend a district Eastern Star meet­
ing at Rose Croix chapter. Prior to
the meeting, Mrs. Cline and Mrs.
Folken were luncheon guests of Mrs.
Hannula in observance of the birth­
days of Mrs. Folken and Mrs. Han­
nula.
Mrs. Harry Culbertson
returned
home Wednesday of last week from
Medford where she had spent a week
with her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
Edgar Culbertson and family. She
had gone to assist the family after
learning <.at her son had suffered
a heart attack. Cause of his trouble
has not been learned but he has im­
proved enough to return to work on
a limited basis.
Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Washburn of
Yakima, who formerly were Ver­
nonia residents, visited week end
before last at Independence with
Mrs. A. L. Kullander then brought
her on here with them to visit at
the home of Mrs. Macile Grady from
Monday until Friday. They called on
other former neighbors while here.
Mrs. Zona Tandy entered the Un­
iversity of Oregon medical school
hospital last week for tests and
treatment.

erman, Idaho were in Vernonia
Monday renewing acquaintances. Mr.
Thompson Jr. is assistant superin­
tendent of power installations at
Hagerman. This was his first visit
here in a number of years.

George Kitchen is home again af­
ter recently being hospitalized.
Mr. and Mrs. Pete Brunsman were
in Portland Friday evening for the
annual reunion of former Marshall-
Wells employees at the dinner held
at the Aero club. About 100 were
present. Saturday evening, the Bruns-
mans were in Milwaukie for a din­
ner meeting of 1954 matrons and
patrons of Eastern Star chapters in
Portland and vicinity.

Yeager and Mrs.
Laureta Lamping narrowly escaped
serious injury Wednesday afternoon
of last week in an accident between
Beaverton and Hillsboro which was
causeed by pheasants. The women
had just remarked that the birds
could cause accidents when some
flew up in front of an oncoming car
and apparently startled him and
caused him to loose control of his
car which came into their lane of
traffic. Aside from bruises, the ladies
came out well but Mrs. Yeager’s
car was badly damaged. Also, the
load of ceramic greenware she had
in the station wagon didn’t fare too
well.

The first birthday of Carrie Ma­
rie Groff Tuesday of this week was
a big affair for which the celebration
started Sunday when her uncle and
aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Deppa
from Seattle visited with her and
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon
Groff. They brought her a beautiful
rosary imported from Germany.
Tuesday morning, birthday wishes
from grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Rangvold Groff and uncle and aunt,
Mr. and Mrs. Loren Groff, came
in long distance calls from Minne­
sota. Tuesday afternoon, several la­
dies came for cake and coffee. They
were Mrs. Wm. Adams, Mrs. Pete
Briones, Mrs. Joe Biesiot and Mrs.
Dee Miller.

The Society of Arts and Crafts
will hold its monthly meeting. Mon­
day, November 2, at 8 p.m. at the
West Oregon Electric meeting room.
Featured will be a display of com­
pleted cone wreaths and holiday
pieces for which instruction will be
given later at workshops. Instruc­
tion will also be given U this meet­
ing in cutting and wiring of various
types of cones, preliminary to final
construction of an all-cone wreath.
Persons attending should bring
long nose pliers, regular pliers and
wire cutters to this meeting. A list
of materials needed for the work­
shops will be given. The meeting is
open to all those interested.
The first workshop will be Thurs­
day, November 5 at 1 p.m. at the
art center at the Clinic building, for
the construction of the cone wreaths.
Currently, a display is on view in
the art center window showing the
materials needed and steps in the
construction of teasel Christmas
trees, for the benefit of those desir­
ing instruction in their making.
A reminder is given, also, to those
interested in making Christmas cards
by the block printing method, that
a workshop for this is being held
this Thursday afternoon, October 29,
at the West Oregon meeting room
at 1 p.m.
Due to the monthly meeting on
Monday of next week, the art class
taught by Mrs. Goss will be post­
poned to Wednesday, November 4.
It will probably be the last class
held this season.
