    Two Families Visiled
On Washington Trip
Group Honors
Couple Monday
CAPITOL HILL — Mr. and Mrs.
Will Harders returned Monday after­
noon from a four day trip to Marys­
ville, Washington, north of Seattle,
where they visited Mrs. Harder’s sis­
ter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Downing and their children who all
live in the vicinity of Everett, Wash­
ington.
Mrs. Ray Baker returned from a
two week trip to Springfield where
she visited a friend, Mrs. Carrie Hall,
who formerly lived in Vernonia.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Oman spent
Sunday visiting with Mrs. Baker.

Rev. Ratzliff has been here several
times and now holds the position for­
merly held by Rev. Sam Cassel who
is well known here.
Meetings will be held at the Ver­
nonia Bible church every evening at
7:30 p.m., September 7 through 13.

Portland visited with her mother,

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kyser and fami­
ly were Saturday evening fair visi­
tors.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stinchfield of
Birkenfeld visited the Charles Sund-
lands during the week. Mr. and Mrs.
Don Sundland are leaving Wednes­
day for their home in Aladita-and
their teaching after visiting the sum­
mer with his folks,,and pjany other
friends and places:

150 Old-Timers Gather
For Picnic on Sunday
TIMBER — Among those from
this vicinity to attend the old timers
picnic held at Schute park in Hills­
boro were Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Tall­
man. There were 150 registered. Ma-
•ny attending did not register.
Catherine Wright fell on a piece
of glass last week cutting her hand.
It required three stitches. Her mo­
ther, Mrs. B. B. Wright, took her to
the doctor this week to have the
stitches removed.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Austin and fami­
ly are moving to Vernonia where
they will enter their children in
school. Timber will have no school
this year.
Prayer meeting was held this week
at Reverend Parisho’s home.
Visitors this week at the Bob Zim­
merman home were Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Custodio from Palmdale. Cali­
fornia.
Lester Pagh came home the first
of the week from Corvallis where he
has been working. In a few days, he
and Mrs. Pagh expect to go to Crater
Lake where he has a job that will
last two months.
Mrs. Violet Tucker and Bill Mul­
key entertained 39 guests Sunday at-
temoon at a barbecue.

NATAL-PITTSBURG — A group of
Natal Grangers and friends enjoyed
a picnic at Dass Park Monday eve­
ning of last week honoring Mr. and
Mrs. Kit Kennedy who are planning
to leave in the near future. They
were presented with a gift of towels
and a piece of Corning ware.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Christensen of
Thousand Oaks, California left for
home Thursday after spending two
weeks here and in Hillsboro. Mrs.
Christensen is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Howard.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Peterson were
supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Devine last Tuesday. They also en­
joyed visiting with Mrs. Devine's
sister who also was a supper guest.
Mr. and Mrs. 1. J. Dass and Mr.
and Mrs. R. S. Lindsay were among
those who visited the Columbia coun­
ty fair Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Peterson spent
a week end at Aubom, Washington
recently visiting their son and fami­
ly, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Peterson.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lindgren of
Vancouver, Mrs. Mabel Lindgren of
Camas and Mr. and Mrs. Noble Dun­
lap were luncheon guests of Mr. and
Mrs. R. S. Lindsay Thursday. After­
wards the Lindgrens and Lindsays
visited the museum at Vernonia.
Mr. and Mrs. William Aho of Los
Angeles called on Mr. and Mrs. Ken­
neth Tupper Sunday afternoon. They
were on their way home after travel­
ing to Minnesota and back through
Canada.
Mrs. Leona Taylor of Perry, Flori­
da spent the past week visiting her
son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Taylor.
Mr. and Mrs. Marian Grant and
family drove to Longview Friday
where they visited Mr. and Mrs.
John Buchanan.
Mr. and Mrs. Byron McLeod and
family of Vernonia called on Mr. and
Mrs. Orin Davis Monday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Ira Peterson and
their two granddaughters visited Mr.

CLATSKANIE Grange No. 321 was the Sweepstakes
winner in the Grange entries at the Columbia county
fair. The booth featured a painted backdrop depicting
a mountain range in hazy blue with a miniature farm­
stead across the back. General farm produce artistical­
ly arranged completed the display. Also, not pictured,
the Fernhill Grange won a special award for their en­
try whose theme was “Harvesting What Comes Natur­
ally’’. The background was constructed out of m oss W t
depict a mountain view and elve figurines were busy
lumbering, picking berries and cones, fishing and fern

gathering. Another display not pictured was that of the
Marshland Grange which won a third place ribbon
with a “Random Harvest’’ theme. The background in
this booth was of sheaves of grain flanked by corn
stalks. In the center was a mosaic of grains, fruits and
nuts in the shape of a fan. Fourth place winner in the
grange booth entries went to Yankton Grange 301,
not pictured. Background in the entry was an Ameri­
can, flag flanked by sheaves of grain, holly and clover.
A centerpiece of grains in a mosaic pattern and general
farm produce completed the picture.
