Implements that use power, but don’t produce it, such as saws, Sand ers, and grinders, can produce fric tion, static electricity, or sparks Power driven machines should be carefully greased and oiled to pre vent friction. This applies to small motors on washing machines and re frigerators. Give some thought to the refrig erator during long warm spells when it is running overtime and may be heating. It is good practice to clean any dust and other flammable ma terials away from these motors says Zinn. All tractors and combines should be equipped with spark arrestors and fire extinguishers. All trucks en tering grain fields should be equip ped with exhaust pipes coming di rectly up from the motor with spark arrestors attached and the arrestors should be checked frequently. All electrical wiring of vehicles used in grain fields should be check ed before harvest starts to make sure no shorting will occur by wire coming on contact with the metal frame. Such sparks have started ma ny fires as a result of tliis . A combine should not be left un attended during the noon hours as this is the most dangerous hour of the harvest day stresses Zinn. Many grain and field fires start during the noon hour from the combine and hot boxes. When working with machinery operating with gasoline motors a disc plow or double disc should be kept handy to hitch onto in case of fire. Zinn stys that every precaution should be used to prevent sparks when working around gasoline and, of course, gasoline should never be exposed if it can be avoided. It is wise to let your equipment cool down before you add gasoline. Cig arette smoking becomes extremely hazardous when machinery is being refueled: If you smoke, take five and have that cigarette before you attempt to refuel your equipment. Don’t use gasoline for cleaning m a chinery and don’t use it as a dry cleaning fluid. Static sparks are easi ly created and it only takes one such spark to explode the gas vapors. Working outside does not afford any more protection when using gaso line as a cleaning fluid than inside of a building. On farm safety pays as much as operating a vehicle on the freeway. A large percentage of our farm acci dents and fatalities could be avoid ed if people would practice safety precautions rather than just reading them states Zinn. Farm accidents are costly, just remember the life you save may be your own.
