Norblad Asks
Site Disposal
Representative Walter Norblad re­
cently requested 111«' Department of
the Army to expedite and speed up
plans for the disposition of the Bea­
ver Army Terminal located near
Clatskanie. Norblad said lie hail been
advised by the Port of St. Helens,
which has jurisdiction over the Bea­
ver terminal area, that there* «ire
prospective industrial users who are
interested in acquiring the* site at
the earliest (xissible date.
Norblad further pointed <mt that
there are both railroad and highway
facilities at the terminal as well as
immediate access to Bonneville pow­
er. "I am advised by people in the
area." Norblad said, “that there is
one particular pros|<ective industrial
plant that could use the site immed­
iately and which will use a great deal
of surplus Bonneville power.”
In making his request to the secre­
tary of the army Norblad also point­
ed out that Columbia counts has been
declared an employment deficiency
area and that the availability of tlx*
Beaver Army Terminal in the near
future for industrial use would lx* a
substantial step in solving that prob­
lem

The Scappoose Pow Wow Days

the five girls that will vie for Pow
Wow Queen.
These girls are selected from the
juniors and seniors at the Scappoose
high school and will soon be out
selling Pow Wow buttons to earn
points which is part of the way the
queen is selected.

state-wide basis, according to Robert

Dick was selected one of four 4-
ll'ers to receive the 1963 $100 O. M.

cific International Livestock Expo­
sition
In the recent state selection of club
members to compete for the 1964 0
M Plummer scholarship. Jerry Lowe
of Rainier was selected as one of
tlx* alternates
Friday. March 27. Anita Niewoehn-
cr, social worker of the Columbia
County Mental Health clinic, attend­
ed a meeting of clinic directors atxl
representatives of the state mental
health division in Salem.
Tlx* discussion dealt with general
administrative matters. A key is­
sue was the budget for 1965-1966 and
1966-1967 to be presented to the legis­
lature toward determining future fi­
nancial needs of the mental health
division.
Dick Magruder was also selected
to compete for a trip to Chicago on
a sectional basis for achievement for
boys in the state judging of the Na­
tional Awards contest.
Charles Stevely was selected as
one of the four 4-H club members to
receive a $360 college scholarship
given by Standard Oil Company

Yep! I guess the cat is out of the
bag. We have operated the Vernonia
Golf club six years as of April 30,
and we feel it is time to change the
looks of the club house.
We were sorry to have to cut down
that nice big oak tree in the yard,
but it was just in the wrong place.
That was a start. From there we
are going to add a room which we
can use as a dining room, party
room or for a little while, until the
remodeling is completed, probably
as a catch all or store room.
We will add a new front entrance
room, but the entrance remains in
the same place. We are also going
to remove the old woodshed which
has been for cart storage and will
extend a new room out even with the
present rest rooms. The old rest
rooms will be completely remodeled
and refurnished. We will even have
one shower.
We will also do some minor re­
modeling in the kitchen, such as
close up some existing windows and
put in some new doors. When we
get done with the job you probably
will not recognize the Vernonia Golf
club house as the same place you
have known for tlx* past 30 odd years
We are sure you will like the looks
of it when it is done and will enjoy

stopping in for a cup of coffee or
a sandwich, even if you do not play
golf.
Please bear with us until our re­
modeling is finished. We know it
will inconvenience some of our cus­
tomers but we will do our best to
finish it up as quickly as possible,
then it will be more enjoyable for
all of us.
Our men's club is growing stead­
ily and everyone seems to be enjoy­
ing the week ends as well as the
Tuesday night play. May 1 started
off another year for our members.
Their paid up green fees run from
May 1 to April 30, 1965. It looks
like we will have a few more this
year than last.
From our point of view, we would
like to see more Vernonia ladies
playing golf as we have had several
requests for get-togethers for Ver­
nonia ladies with the ladies' clubs at
other courses. These matches are a
great lot of fun and with the 'new
club room coming up, guests could
be entertained quite easily here at
your own club house, a facility we
have not had in the pa«t
We will also be glad to schedule
lessons for any of the ladies who wish
to take them.

Cold water washing will keep
bright colors from fading but clothes
should be washed often before they
are grimy. Laundering in cold water
also helps prevent wrinkling in some
man-made fibers, but don't expect
to get heavily soiled greasy clothes
clean this way.
Credit cards have a religious as­
pect — grim reminders that there is
such a thing as judgment day.
