There were 11 days in July and
eight days in August over 80 de
grees.
From the first of June, the time
folks like to consider the begin
ning of summer, there were 14
days in June, 10 days in July, 15
days in August and nine so far in
September when
temperature
ranged between 70 and 80 de
grees.
The low readings for this per

July was the driest month. On
ly .63 of an inch fell in June, 1.85
inches in August and .53 of an inch
so far in September.
Since plants grow very little
when temperatures drop below

Fire Destroys
Home Thursday
Fire of undetermined origin
completely destroyed the home of
Mr. and Mrs. James Gaston of
Keasey route about midnight
Thursday of last we?k. The family
was all in bed and asleep when he
was awakened by the crackling
sound of the fire. All members of
the family were gotten out but all
possessions were lost.
The Gaston place is off the main
Keasey road and has previously
been known as the Coons place,
the Kirkbride place and the Ges-
sel place.
At present, the Gaston family,
which includes a boy aged five, a
girl aged four and a boy one year
old, is staying with his brother.
Bill Gaston on Rose avenue in the
former Gilmore house. They have
found a house to move to on Corey
hill as soon as furniture is gotten
together.
The Gastons had insurance on
the house and partial insurance on
the contents. It is understood they
plan to rebuild.
A church group and other indi
viduals have been assisting with
getting clothing, bedding and other
necessities for the family.

At the meeting of the Vernonia
Jayeees Thursday evening of last
week, two Jaycee members from
Scappoose were present to give
the local group additional informa
tion about how to complete organ
ization and the goals such groups
are to achieve. The guests were
Dick Sanders, who headed the
Scappoose club last year, and Gay
Allison, new state representative.
The big problem now for the
Vernonia group is obtaining a few
more young men between the ages
of 21 and 36 who are interested in
community betterment. They must
have 25 members signed before
they can obtain a charter. They
make an appeal for other young
men who will join to contact Neil
Zimmerman, president, or any
other member, or come to the
meeting this evening at the fire
hall.
Sanders and Allison also told
the group how members can work
toward an honor cup or trophy and
gain recognition for themselves
and the club.
A movie is to be shown this
evening at th? fire hall at 8:00
p.m.
