At Past Chiefs Party
Fire Department
Party Saturday
The severe Saturday night
storm and illness cut the attend
ance at the fire department
Christmas party Saturday even
ing, but nine of the department
members and their families were
able to be present at the fire hall
for the festivities. They enjoyed
games and carol singing, a visit
from Santa and refreshments.
The firemen also report that
Santa was on time Saturday af
ternoon in spite of the storm and
many children visited him, al
though some were kept away by
the storm and illness. Santa was
glad for the shelter of the nice
Vernonia fire hall for the two-
hour period so he could rest and
be ready to be on his way again.
In addition to listening to the re
quests of the children he present
ed each with a candy cane.
Another way we can prevent
our youth from slipping away too
swiftly is to hide the car keys.
Mrs. Charley Hickman enter
tained members of the Past
Chiefs club December 5 for the
annual Christmas party at which
gifts were exchanged by secret
pals. For the occasion, her home
was attractively decorated in
keeping with the season with a
paiasol Christmas tree adding a
clever modernistic touch to the
scene. The framework of a girl’s
parasol had been used with large
size gold tinsel rope covering
each rib and large tree ornament
balls on the top and tip of each
rib. This was set in one of the
cleverly designed containers that
several have been making by cov
ering coffee cans with assorted
shapes of macaroni which are
then sprayed with gold.
After the gift exchange, delic
ious cherry Christmas dessert was
served with coffee and tea.
The club will meet next at the
home of Mrs. Reta Lamping Jan
uary 2.

the school program. Also, a com
mittee is working on a Christmas
basket to be given bo a needy
family.
Following the meeting, delic
ious fancy Christmas breads were
served ait tables which had been
beautifully decorated with holly
and Christmas ornaments by Ir
ma Chance and Cora Lange. The
Christmas tree was the heavily
berried top of a holly tree which
was provided by Mrs. Lange and
the gifts for the guests at the
Oregon - Washington Pythian
home were heaped about it. The
members chose to give gifts for
the home rather than to have a
gift exchange. The box of gifts
was taken to the home Sunday
by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Gamer.
Assisting Mrs. Chance with
the refreshments were Leona
Haverland and Lesta Garner.

Christmas Tea
Colorful Event
One of the most delightful so
cial events of the Christams sea
son for the past several years is
the Christmas tea aranged by the
home ec classes at Venonia high
school under the direction of their
instructor, Mrs. Nancy Anderson.
The 1961 tea was held Tuesday
afternoon of this week and drew
the largest attendance of par
ents and friends of the girls of
any held to date. A Christmas
around the world theme was used
and the home ec room was color
fully decorated with various
types of Christmas trees and
other decorations. Trees were
made of teasle, picks, net and or
naments in various arrangements
of them. Kissing balls, dolls rep
resenting various countries and
girls in costumes, along with
foods representative of various
nationalities all added to the
theme.
For entertainment, John Jen
sen, vocal music teacher, sang a
group of Christmas songs after
which the sophomore girls mod
eled the wool skirts they have
made this year.
The colorful decorations in the
entire high school building, from
the windows to the streamer
draped halls helped put every one
in the mood for Christmas.
Too many highway travelers
seem to think the right-of-way
gives them the right to be care
less.

KODAK CAMERAS FOR
CHRISTMAS GIVING
The winds that blew with fury
Saturday evening took all of the
linemen of the West Oregon Elec
tric company away from the an
nual Christmas party and dinner
for the employees, directors and
families which was held at the
IOOF hall with the ladies of the
Rebekah lodge serving the din
ner. Some families were unable
to attend due to the man of the
house being out trying to repair
line breaks.
Even so, abut 65 members of
families and employees who were
not out on calls did enjoy the ev
ening which began with the tur
key dinner and concluded with
games.
Make sure your decorative
Christmas lighting does not over
load electrical circuits.
