College at Longview
BIRKENFELD — Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Larson, Fred Larson and
sons, Terry aind Dave, went over
to Longview Saturday evening to
see the fooHball game between
Lower Columbia Junior college
and Wenatchee. Wayne Larson
played some for the Lower Co­
lumbia Junior college. Wayne and
his brother, Marvin, are attending
college in Longview. AI Berg was
also in Longview Saturday to vis­
it Gene and Reba Larson and
family.
Jepson Lonnquist visited his
family in Birkenl'eld over the
week end. He worked on some
sketches of his children while
here. Mr. Lonnquist has been
working on some portraits in oil
in Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Beach were
in Chehalis on business Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crouch and
the former Dorothy Wallace from
Astoria; the Crouch’s daughter,
Bernice Fink, and her daughter,
Phylis Hamlin, both from Port­
land visited with Mr. and Mrs.
Art Bellingham Saturday. Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Bellingham and
family spent Sunday afternoon
with the Art Bellinghams. They
finished painting the house this
week end.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Rodgers
and girls spent Sunday evening
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Francis Larson.
Despite coastal fog along Ore­
gon’s coastline forests become
quite dry during summer months.
During this hazardous period care
is needed to protect the forests
from fire.
The fellow who straddles the

This week, three teams (Stan­
dard Oil, Vernonia Drug and
West Oregon Electric) are tied
for first place. Millers is holding
down the next place spot. Mar-
lea Leffler rolled the high game,
219 and Dolly Laird the high ser­
ies, 547.
Splits picked up: Vi Cameron
2-7, 5-6-10; Marlea Leffler 3-10;
Trudy Magoff 5-7; Vi Aldrich 3-
10; Hazel Shipman 5-6; Joyce

Two men’s leagues started last
week, one on Wednesday and one
on Thursday. Due to some confu­
sion since this was the first week,
results are not available. There
are still one or two openings in
each of these leagues. Anyone

Mrs. Arthur Lamping of Beav­
erton was honor guest Saturday
afternoon at a pink and blue
shower at the home of Miss Peg­
gy Bowerman for which she and
Miss Sunny DeHart were co­
hostesses.
Clever original invitations for
the affair were made by Miss De­
Hart and drew much comment
from those who received them.
Appropriate games were played
during the afternoon with prizes
going to Mrs. Ray Lamping and
the honor guest. After the games,
a basket decorated with pink and
blue and guarded by storks re­
vealed an attractive array of
packages which the honor guest
was permitted to open and dis­
play.
Highlight of the refreshments
was the cake iced in white and
decorated with pink bootees
which had been made for the oc­
casion by Mrs. Emil Messing.
Guests other than those already
mentioned were Mrs. M. J. Lamp­
ing Sr., Mrs. J. W. Nichols, Mrs.
Cecil Johnson, Mrs. O. T. Bate­
man, Mrs. Harold McEntire, Mrs.

Tractor Mishap
Causes Injury
BIRKENFELD — Walter Lar-
son of Silverton who used to live
here, was badly injured Wednes­
day of last week while cultivat­
ing his strawberries. He got off
his tractor to adjust by hand what
wouldn’t perform properly and
was caught by one tractor wheel
and the cultivator which ran- ov­
er his chest. Luckily, the soft
dirt saved his life. He is in the
hospital in Silverton. He is a
brother to Francis and Howard
Larson, Mrs. Everett Johnston
and Mrs. Francis Nordstrom. Mr.
and Mrs. Francis Nordstrom and
Katy went to Silverton Sunday
to see Walter.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Wodtly vis­
ited Mr. and Mrs. Arby Mills Sat­
urday. The Wodtlys were on their
way to their cottage which is off
the Sunset highway. Mr. and Mrs.
A. Mills were in Portland Friday.
Mrs. Royal McCaffery, Port­
land, visited friends in the val­
ley last Tuesday. The McCafferys
operated the store in Birkenfeld
at one time. Their daughter,
Sheila, and her husband and two
little girls are now living in Ohio.
The Womens’ Missionary group
met at Lola Watson’s home Wed­
nesday. Mrs. Charles Hansen,
vice chairman, acted as chairman
for Flo Crawford, who was in
the hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. George Van,
Clatskanie, visited at the Robert
Berg home Wednesday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Hopkins
! and family were guests at the
: home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Davis
and family, Vernonia, Saturday
evening. They celebrated their
childrens’ birthdays.
Lawrence and Dawn Johnston
were in Beaverton Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Udey
and children visited with his par­
ents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Udey ov­
er the week end. The Frederick
Udeys are from Dallas. Lorna
Udey is in Portland for a few
days this week.

treasured for Oregon from 1952
to 1950, has announced his can­
didacy for the Republican nomi­
nation for U. S. Senator in an ef­
fort to capture the seat now held
by Wayne Morse. Unander re­
signed as state treasurer in Janu­
ary of 1960 fc accept an appoint­
ment by President Eisenhower to
the Federal Maritime Board,
where he served to the end of
the term, June 30, 1961. He is a
resident of Portland.

Organization was the topic of
the day when the Mist-Nehalem
Extension Unit met at the home
of Mrs. Norman Hansen an Sep­
tember 15.
Many interesting plans for the
coming extension year were dis­
cussed by the members.
The next meeting will be on
treats from the freezer. Mrs. Al­
bert Blount and Mrs. Norman
Hansen, project leaders for this
meeting, will be bringing mem­
bers the latest information. The
meeting will be held at the home
of Mrs. James Watson, Birkenfeld
on October 13 at 10:30 a.m. Sack
lunches are to be brought.

coffee. It was Mrs. Claude Kyser’s
birthday.
