The fortieth annual convention
for the Rebekah lodges in dis
trict 5 was held at Vernonia w ith
Mt. H eart Rebekah lodge as host
on June 30. O ther lodges in this
district are Plym pton, W auna; La
France Clatskanie; Fern, Rainier;
and St. Helens lodge, St. Helens.
Between noon and- 1:00 p.m., a
coffee hour was held in the IOOF
hall dining room w here tables
w ere decorated w ith small green
pixies holding signs welcoming
th e Oregon Assembly president,
Cleona Applegate of Central
Point who was not only here for
the convention but was making
h er official visit to Mt. H eart
lodge.
The lodge hall was decorated
w ith lilies, the flower of the as
sem bly president, and h er m ot
to; “Stop, Look and Act,” was
prom inently displayed. To em
phasize the request of the O re
gon grand m aster th a t all Rebe
kahs and Odd Fellows rem em ber
the Bible and its teachings, m em
bers of the local lodge had made
a synthetic stained glass windaw
which stood in one corner of the
platform w ith lights behind it
and in front of it, was an a lta r on
which rested an open Bible and
a vase of lilies.
At 1:00 p.m. the convention was
opened in the Rebekah degree by
Mt. H eart lodge w ith H erlene
Robertson, noble grand, presid
ing. She also introduced distin
guished guests including the as
sem bly president, Cleona Apple-
gate; the state publicity chair

The Mt. H eart drill team seat

Reports w ere heard from each
lodge in the district as well as
papers on various phases of the
Rebekah lodge w ork A new fea
tu re this year, requested by the
assem bly president and led by
her, was a p'anel discussion and
dem onstrations of various parts of
the work. It proved to be a very
successful way of giving the in
struction so th a t it could be u n
derstood and tak en home to be
used.
The afternoon was enlivened
by a relaxation num ber by P lym
pton lodge members entitled “Her
get up and go has got up and
w ent.”
Following the afternoon session,
a d inner was served a t the Chris
tian church.
Previous to th e evening session
of the convention, entertainm ent
was presented at 7:30 p.m. w ith
friends invited to enjoy it, also.
The Combo presented numbers,

M artha Bush and Judy Cay wood
did interpretive dances and the
Mt. H eart drill team put on a
very impressive fancy drill wthich
was made especially beautiful by
their new rose-flowered formáis,
all made alike.
The officers for he 1962 conven
tion to be held at W auna were
also introduced and seated before
the guests w ere asked to retire.
M axine-M cKillys, W auna will be
chairm an and the Vernonia Mt.
H eart lodge will be represented
by Isabel A nderegg as past chair
man and Irene M inger as inside
guardian.
In the evening session, the Mt.
Heart officers opened in the Re
bekah degree, made the intro
ductions of visitors and Assembly
officers, then the chairs w ere fill
ed by officers from the various
Vernonia Group
Picnic August 6
The annual picnic of the V er
nonia Society w ill be held in
Portland this year on A ugust 6
at Creston park at Powell and
52nd Ave. S. E. Tables and bench
es have been reserved in the
northw est corner of the park for
the picnic and parking space is
available on the w est side of the
park. P ark facilities are avail
able for the day beginning at 10
a.m.
Luncheon will be fam ily style
and coffee vzill be provided be
ginning at 12:00 noon. Ice cream
and soft drinks will be available
at nearby concessions. A business
m eeting and election of officers
w ill be held following the lunch
eon.
This will be the fourth annual
picnic of the society which was
organized for present and form er
residents of Vernonia and the Up
p er N ehalem valley. Last year’s
picnic was held at Vernonia and
about two hundred w ere regis
tered in attendance. Awards will
be given this year at the picnic
to the oldest m em ber of th e so
ciety present and also to the
m ember having come the fa rth
est to attend the picnic.

dents of V ernonia and the val
ley and their friends are cordially
invited to attend.

grand was from Plym pton, the
chaplain from Fern, the past noble
grand from St. Helens and the
banner charge was given by La-
France. M argaret Thompson was
the candidate for the initiation
and became a m em ber of Mt.
H eart lodge.
A fter the initiation, the assem
bly president, Cleona Applegate
made a short talk and the session
was closed in form.
During the convention, past
chairm en for the previous 39 con-
ventions w ere honored and also
charter members who w ere p re
sent from any of the lodges.
Among them was Lena Stanton
of Glenwood, charter m em ber of
Mt. H eart lodge, and- also a past
convention chairman.
Between 150 and 200 attended
the convention which was ac-

Ruffs Complete
-Trip to Florida
Rev. and Mrs. E. J. Ruff, son
Edwin and la u g h te r and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Callaw ay and
two children of Portland arrived
home Friday from a three-w eeks
trip to Plant City, Florida, w here
they visited Rev. Ruff’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ruff.
Enroute they visited relatives
in various places in California;
in W ichita Falls and F ort W orth,
Texas and friends a t Paris, T ex
as w here they had lived at one
tim e before coming to Oregon.
They returned home by the
northern route, visiting G lacier
National P ark in M ontana and
they planned to visit th e ir son
Je rry and fam ily who w ere mov
ing to Glasgow, M ontana from
Spokane, but missed them as they
w ere coming to Spokane and
their son was going to Glasgow.
They visited various churches
across the nation am ong which
were: Wesleyan M ethodist, W in
slow, Arizona; Paris Bible, Paris,
Texas; Belden Baptist, Belden,
Mississippi and C hristian A dvent
at Lakeland, Florida.
T hey encountered m uch e x
trem ely hot w eather, the peak
being 120 degrees w hile passing
through Nevada; and are glad to
be back to the air-conditioned
Northwest.

To Install Friday
The American Legion and au x
iliary have scheduled Friday,
Ju ly 14 at 8 p.m. for the installa
tion of their new officers.
Officers to be installed for the
Legion are: A. E. Wood, com
m ander; Thomas Hall, first vice
com m ander; Carl Davis, second
vice-commander; L. E. Stiff, ad
ju tan t; W ilbur Wilson, finance
officer and B J. Horn, service of
ficer. The St. Johns installing
team will seat them.
