Every citizen or resident of the
United States, including minors,
who had a gross income of $600 or
more in 1959, must file a Federal
income tax return on or before
April 15, 1960, A. G. Erickson,
director of Internal Revenue for
the Oregon District, reminded
taxpayers today.
If the taxpayer is 65 or over
on January 1, 1960, he is not re-
quired to file unless his gross in-
come in 1959 was at least $1,200,
Mr. Erickson said.
He added that even though a
taxpayer is not required to file
under these rules, he must file
to obtain a refund if any income
tax was withheld from his pay.
Mr. Erickson said there is one
exception to the general rule.
Self-employed persons must file
an income tax return and pay a
self-employment tax if net earn
ings from self-employment were
$400 or more.
He explained that self-employ
ed persons are those carrying on
a trade or business as sole pro
prietors, as members of a partner
ship, or rendering services as in
dependent contractors.
Mr. Erickson said the deadline
for filing is April 15, 1960, but he
urged taxpayers to file as soon
after January 1, 1960, as possible
and mail their returns to "Dis-
trict Director of Internal Reven
ue” for the district in which they
live. Checks or money orders for
any tax due must accompany the
return and should be made pay
able to the “Internal Revenue
Service,” he said
Taxpayers who have questions
on this subject may obtain Docu
ment No. 5107, “Filing Your Tax
Return," by calling or writing to
their local Internal Revenue of
fice, Mr Erickson said
For persons who wish assis
tance with their reports, the

One hundred twenty-five 4-H
club boys and girls and 4-H club
leaders attended a 4-H officers’
training meeting
at McBride
school in St. Helens Saturday,
January 16.
Columbia County Sheriff Spen
cer Younce, talked to the group
about the importance of the kind
of training given to members of
4-H clubs and other youth organ
izations. He stressed that files
of law enforcement offices indi
cate that young men and women
who are constantly in trouble
have not been boys and girls
who participated in such organiza
tions as the 4-H club.
Reverend Orlo Hoye of the
Episcopal church of St. Helens
gave the invocation and also talk
ed to the group briefly about the
importance of their offices and
the importance of good Christian
living.
Mrs. Mildred Williamson of th
Sentinel Mist met with the 4-H
club reporters and gave them
some pointers on writing good
news articles. The various offi
cers of 4-H clubs met in indivi
dual groups during the morning
session for instructions in the du
ties of their office. During the
afternoon, the entire group was
given instruction and allowed to
participate in games led by junior
leaders.
