Forest Rehabilitation
Accomplishments Viewed
Nineteen fifty-nine marked the
end of the tenth year since the
rehabilitation of state owned for
est land and especially the Tilla
mook burn got underway by the
state forestry department. It re
presented the largest project of
this nature that had ever been
undertaken by any agency in the
nation, either state or federal.
Accomplishments up to the end
of the year included planting 41,-
347,869 seedlings on 52,792 acres
of forest land and in addition the
aerial seeding of 69,168 acres. This
brings the total area reforested to
105,561 acres, of which around
100.000 acres is in the Tillamook
burn.
While tree planting and seeding
was going on the state felled 1,-
282.937 snags as a part of the pro
gram designed to keep fires out
of the burned areas. Approxi
mately 150 miles of fire corridors
were built, a similar mileage of
roads constructed and an addi
tional 2000 miles of roads main
tained. It is estimated that the
huge project is more than half
completed

Census Office
Demonia Eagle
Opened at Salem 2 THURSDAY, JAN. 21. 1960
Establishment of a district of
fice for the 1960 census of popu
lation and housing at 1965 Taft
street in Salem has been announ
ced by Director Guy E. Rainboth
of the census bureau’s regional
office at Seattle, Washington.
Ronald Blundell of Salem will
be supervisor of the district of
fice. He will direct a force of 32
crew leaders and 500 census tak
ers in the following counties:
Benton, Clackamas, Clatsop, Co
lumbia, Lincoln, Marion, Polk,
Tillamook, Washington, and Yam
hill.
Taking the 1960 census nation
ally will require the services of
160,000 enumerators, 10,000 crew
leaders, and 400 district supervi
sors, all temporary workers. The
district supervisors, working un
der the general direction of the
permanent regional field direc
tors, are responsible for all phases
of the census in their districts.
Duties of the district supervisor
include the recruiting of the crew
leaders, obtaining space for crew
leader training, recruiting and
training a small office staff, re
viewing the completed question
naires, and direct supervision of
the field canvass which begins on
April 1.
Prior to the start of the census,
all households will receive in the
mail an advance census report
form, a new census-taking device
which is designed to speed up the
field canvass and provide more
accurate statistics.
Distribution
of this form, which contains the
basic population and housing
questions, gives the family a
chance to assemble information |
about each member in advance of
the census taker’s visit.
