Taking advantage of a raft of
friends is the only thing that
keeps some people afloat.
By Dr. Harold M. Erickson
Oregon State Health Officer
Statistics just completed show
1,120 persons lost their lives in
Oregon accidents last year, slight
ly more than the 1,108 deaths
during 1957.
Motor vehicle fatalities de
creased from 494 to 467 and the
deaths from home accidents con
tinued to decline, dropping from
232 to 207. The two categories
which pushed the total upward
were occupational accidents,
which increased slightly from 132
to 142, and public accidents, which
rose sharply from 210 to 274.
More complete analysis of these
figures reveals that five public
and occupational sub-categories
were responsible for Oregon’s re-
latively-poor accident record last
year. These were agriculture,
manufacturing, water transporta
tion. drownings, and miscellan
eous public accidents, each of
which showed substantial in
creases over 1957. It is interest
ing that logging, long known for
its hazards, produced fewer fa
talities last year, which speaks
for the accident prevention work
in this field.
We are now entering our vaca
tion season, when thousands each
week will take advantage of Ora-
gon's plentiful supply of public
beaches and waterways. Such re
creation certainly contributes io
good health, if we keep alert to
the dangers involved. Last year
136 persons died from drowning
or water transportation accidents.
A good dose of common sense
and a healthy respect for water
by all vacationers would go a
long way to reducing that toll
this year.
