OREGON Net Men Take Measure of Viking Five CWstmos Ceov The Vernonia Loggers, looking more impressive with each out ing, travelled to Tillamook to play the Tillamook Catholic Vikings and sent their hosts down to a 76-45 defeat. Vernonia jumped off to a first quarter lead, and al though the Loggers led through- out the first half, the Vikings stayed in contention and trailed at the half-way mark by only eleven points, 31-23. After four quick points by Tillamook, the Vernonia team settled down to the business at hand and quickly spread the gap to twenty five points. It’s a great joy Io wish you a Merry Yule and to say "thank you" for your friendship during 1958! The reserves took over in the fourth quarter and demonstrating that they can also play the game well, upped the winning margin to thirty-one points. Dick Crowston led the Vernonia scoring, tallying twenty-two points, and Bill Ho ward swished through sixteen more. ; V it ty ae A T The Loggers now take a five day vacation from the hardwood floor after which they will re sume two a day drills in an effort to avenge the early season set back they suffered at the hands of their next opponent. DEC. 25. 1958 Y ule Decorations Enliven Season This year. Vernonia seems to have blossomed forth as never before with attractive Christmas decorations and a drive around town in the evening is recom mended as a part of the Christ mas celebration. An outstanding display which is attracting much attention and which is notable for pointing up the true meaning of Christmas which is so often lost in the shuffle, is the nativity scene at the home of Mr. and Mrs Bob Curl. Carols which are played Capacity Crowd Views Program Approximately 1000 persons at tended the annual Christmas pro gram at the Washington grade school Monday evening. The au ditorium was filled to capacity for the program which featured the play, "Stars Over Christmas, which told the story of Christmas in several places and times as re called by the stars. A welcome by the kindergar ten and selections by the high school chorus and the combined bands of the grade and high school were also included in the program. Mrs. Dorothy Sandon was gen eral chairman of the program and the music was under the direction of Robert Thornton and Mrs. Car ol Smith. A large decorated tree, furnisn- ed by the E P. Stamm Tree Farm, was the focal point of attention as Santa Claus made his appear ance at the end of the program and passed out treats to the youngsters. Over 700 bags of candy fur nished through contributions from the people of the communi ty were distributed. School closed at noon Tuesday with Christmas parties in the various rooms and a school lunch featuring hamburgers as a treat. during the evening add to the enjoyment of it.
