GOLF
NEWS
and
VIEWS
By Gordon Reed
Our weather still holds good
for golfing, even though it is
tough on our loggers and farmers.
It is getting very tough on the
golf course fairways as you can
see by that very brown and dry
condition. We are able to keep
the greens in nice condition due
to our sprinkler system and all
night watering three or four
nights per week. It is satisfac-
tion not only to the golfers, but
to ourselves when they hit a ball
to our greens and it stops where
it hits or only rolls a snort dis
tance. Many courses at this time
of year have trouble with the
ball not holding on the greens
due to their very dry and hard
condition.
Vernonia Golf club
has had many nice compliments
on how well our greens look and
hold a ball.
Last Saturday we had another
fine group of fellows from the
Crown Zellerbach company, St.
Helens division play a tourna
ment on our golf course. Most of
their men are regular players at
their Columbia county golf course
and we believe they all enjoyed
themselves, especially the fol
lowing golfers who won the
prizes:
Low net, John Zanniker; se
cond low net, Howard Hall; third
low net, Wally Lambert; longest
drive on No. 3, Harold Amos;
closest to the pin on No. 4, John
Younce; fewest putts, Burt Zur
cher.
We hope they enjoyed their
match as much as we enjoyed
their company and that another
match can be arranged soon.
Again Sunday many new faces
showed up from the Forest Grove,
Beaverton and Portland area to
play golf. Rainier also had quite
a few golfers on the course. Gene
Stennick who has entered the
Southern Oregon golf champion
ship, to be held at Medford, over
the Labor Day holiday as a play
er from the Vernonia Golf club,
played 27 holes of golf with his
brother Bob.
Gene turned in
scores of 38-36-42. Bob played
18 holes with a score of 38-38.
We wish Gen? the best of luck
in his matches at Medford
Did you know:
That they have a PEE WEE
golf championship each year at
Orlando, Florida. Some 200 Pee
Wee golfers ages 3 to 15 years
play a regular tournament. What
fun th?se kids must have.
Did you know:
The national senior open golf
tournament (you have to be 55
years of age or older and love to
play golf to belong) was held at
Esmeralda public course in Spo
kane last week end? Gene Sara-
zen, America’s dean of golf, was
low man after 54 holes of play.
Willie Goggin from San Jose,
California beat him with a 72 hole
score of 270 to Gene’s 271.
In the international senior golf
tournament just played in British
Columbia, one of the players who
was 70 years of aged fired one
round of 18 holes and had a 70.
It is quite a feat to shoot your
age in a golf match.
We are trying to prove only
one thing: That golf is the one
sport that can be played and
enjoyed by people of all ages,
both men and women.
