The tax information committee of the Oregon Association of Public Ac countants, in cooperation with the National Society of Public Ac- countants, has prepared this dis cussion, presented by the Ver nonia Eagle as a reader service.) How many exemptions can I claim? Each exemption is a $600 de duction. That is, for each ex emption you are allowed to make $600 tax free. Exemptions determine the amount of tax-free income you are allowed each year, and are devised to make the tax fair be tween single persons, married couples, and large and small fa milies. You are entitled to one exemp tion for yourself. You are en titled to one additional exemp tion if, on December 31, 1957, you had attained 65 years of age. or if you were blind If you were both 65 and blind, you are entitled to two addition al exemptions. You are also en titled to exemptions on the same basis for your wife, if you file a joint return. I If you file a separate return, | you can claim your wife’s ex emptions only if she has no in come and was not claimed on any other taxpayer’s return for 1957 If your wife or husband died in 1957, the additional exemptions lor age and blindness are deter mined as at the date of death, rather than December 31. Each dependent must qualify under all five of the following conditions. 1. Dependent must have recciv- ed over one-half of his support from you in 1957. 2. Dependent did not have over $600 income in 1957, besides what you provided, unless the depend- ent was your child or stepchild under 19 years of age, or if over 19 years of age, a full time stu dent, in which case the depend ent child can earn any amount as long as you actually provide over one-half of the cost of support. 3. Dependent is not claimed by any other taxpayer and does not file a joint return with another taxpayer. For instance, do not list a dependent married daugh ter who files a joint return wit her husband 4. Dependent must be a citizen of the United States or a resident of the United States, Canada, Mexico, The Republic of Panama or the Canal Zone. 5. Dependent must be closely re. iated to you or be anyone else who meets requirements 1, 2, 3 and 4 and had your home as his principal place of abode and was a member of your household, even if not related to you. If the dependent has worked part time and earned less than $600 in 1957 or was your child under 19 or over 19 and a student, and income tax was withheld from such earnings, the depend ent should file a tax return to secure refund of the tax withheld. This will in no way prevent you from also claiming the exemp tion for the dependent, provided of course, that dependents meets all five of the conditions If your dependent can qualify in all other ways except that you do not furish over one-half of his support then perhaps you can arrange with th? others who con tribute to his support for you to claim the credit anyway under a multiple support agreement Form 2120 Often unusual or borderline cases arise and the internal re- venue bureau advises consulta tion with properly qualified ad visers for those needing help J DOUBLE SHOE MILEAGE • • at about one-third the cost of t ■ new pair with new soles [ and heels. House of the Circle H. Rabbitry of Warren. Unfortunately, the majority of I them go to city homes where no provision is made for their pro per care and where the new owners have little idea of their needs. Many of them come to sad ends, and all so needlessly. Here is what to do for the Easter bunny to make him well and happy and as much a pet as the family cat: Most important, his hutch should be dog-proof. It should have a floor of wire, 12 by 1 inch wire is best, and chicken wire makes good sides. The hutch roof must protect against rain and direct sun The hutch should not be placed over a concrete or wood floor, but preferably over dirt, with sawdust as second choice. The hutch should be 3 by 4 feet and two feet high to provide for th? space the rabbit will need when full grown. Six ounces of good rabbit pel lets per day is adequate feed for a mature animal. A salt block can b? provided during hot wea ther, and the rabbit must have a good supply of clean fresh water before him at all times. Coffee cans make good waterers. They also make good feed cans, if they are nailed to a block of wood, such as planer ends, so that the rabbit cannot tip the can over, while eating The water can is heavy enough so the rabbit will not upset it easily. Although it seems like fun to do so, the young rabbit should not be handled too much. He is apt to get sick by too much han dling at first Give him time to get used to his new home and | handlers, before trying to get him > to respond to too much loving. ; Do not feed him candy or other | sweets, as his stomach is not । made to handle such food. Too [ much grass or other greens will j also give him a stomach ache j The rabbit pellets will give him all of the food requirements that he needs. Rabbits are fine pets for child ren who handle them properly. They make excellent 4-H pro jects. They are particularly good for the child with limited space for raising animals. Also, the youngster can get started in a 4-H project with a small amount of money for purchasing the orig inal stock. For bulletins and individual problems regarding rabbits and their handling, call the county extension office at the court house. Mr. and Mrs. House arc interested in developing a better understanding of rabbit produc tion among 4-H club members and would welcome the oppor tunity to discuss the project with any boys and girls in the area who are interested.
