Forest farmers with new plant
ings of trees often report dam-
age from meadow mice killing
the small seedling trees by gnaw
ing the bark. Pat Zimmerman.
Fern Hill, found that he was
having trouble of this type on
trees planted last spring, How -
ever. J. C. Skeana and Sons a
short distance away did not ex
perience such difficulty, Grow-
ers will have to watch their in-
dividual tree sites.
Mice can be controlled by using
zinc phosphide treated wheat.
The cost is low and it only re
quires 2 to 4 pounds of the bait
to give control Treatments may
have to be repeated. Very ef
fective ccntrol may also b?
achieved by splaying the area
with certain insecticides such as
endrin. Generally, the cost is
considerably
higher
although
more effective.
Latest reports show strawber-
ry storage to be be low- that of a
year ago. Fresh strawberry sal *s
have been high and processing
has not kept up with last year
The consumption of frozen ber-
ne; has be -n quite heavy during
the fall and may contitioe during
the winter months
The national acreage for 1953
looks like it might be eight per
cint b-low the 1957 acreage Ore
gon is cutting back to around
15.000 acres or over a 3.000 acre
reduction.
