    Petition Äsks For Tolerance
Jehovah's Witnesses of the For
est Grove congregation met Oc
tober 4 to approve a petition ask
ing tfye Dominican Republic to
lift its ban of last July 25 res
tricting the religious activity of
the movement there.
According to Harold McFa~-
lan, presiding minister of the
Forest Grove congregation, the
lengthy petition cited specific
names and places of police bru
tality that were personally au
thenticated by eight of the ten
American missionaries deported
August 3 from the Dominican Re
public. The missionaries related
their experiences at a regional
assembly in Baltimore, where the
petition was originally adopted
August 24 by 33,091 of Jehovah’s
Witnesses in attendance.
The petition was addressed to
Generalissimo Trujillo, acknow
ledged dictator of the Caribbean
republic, and named the Roman
Catholic Church as sharing the
blame for the government's ac
tion.
Reporting on the atrocities des
cribed in the petition, Mr. Mc
Farlan said, "In one sector whole
families were taken to prison and
the male members of the fami
lies were beaten senselss befoi ■
their own wives and children.
Other male Witnesses were kick
ed and hit with rifle butts until
they were bleeding and fell ex- <
hausted. Some were beaten and
left unconscious on the ground
in the patio of the prison witn
blood running out of their ears,
nose and mouth.

should be informed of it and
have published the entire state
