Rockefeller Is Topic Far Study Club Program Sam Hearing Sr. Honored by Star The autobiography of John D Rockerfeller Jr. by Raymond B. Fosdick was used for the pro gram presented by Mrs. Bill Horn at the meeting of the Vernonia Study club last Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Sam Hearing Jr. She told of his boyhood schooling and strict upbringing with a very religious background Also, she told of his different pledges and projects, a lot of his interest being in medical re search. His1 contributions for re storing art and buildings in dif ferent parts of the world as well a- tn this country have been large. During the business session, Mrs. Darrold Proehl was elected president; Mrs. John Harris, vice- president and Mrs. Lyman Hawk- f Sr., secretary-treasurer Eighteerf members were pre sent for the meeting. The club will meet again May 2 at the home of Mrs. Marvin Kamholz. A surprise addendum was giv en for Sam Hearing Sr. at the last Eastern Star meeting. April 17th, in honor of his birthday. Several officers wearing multi colored cowboy hats, carrying sil ver good-lt|ck horseshoes partici pated in the degree while the or ganist played "Pony Boy”, and the worthy matron, Lillian Da vis. presented Mr. Hearing with a beautiful western belt buckle. Next Sunday, the annual wor thy grand matron's tea will be held at the Eastern Star-Masonic home at Forest Grove, from 2 un til 5 o’clock. Anyone wishing transportation to the tea. please call the Wilbur Davises. On May 3, Nehalem chapter members have been invited by the worthy matron and patron, Irma and Tim Timmons, to at tend Roosevelt chapter. Portland as special guests. They are the daughter and son-in-law of Ethel Titus, former Vernonia resident and past matron of Nehalem chapter. A mother's day pro gram will be given. Easter bunnies and beautiful spring flowers decorated the din ing tables and delicious home made cakes and coffee were serv ed by Myrtle Brock, Sally Ortner and Julia Fisher. In addition to the bounteous Easter dinner, the days activities included burro riding, an Easter egg hunt and baseball for the children. APRIL 25. 195? 1 I Odd Fellows Enjoy Crab Feed Friday A group of 21 persons, includ ing 11 Odd Fellows, seven Re bekahs and Marjorie Reynolds and her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reynolds, were at Warren ton last Friday to attend a crab feed put on by the Odd Fellows lodge there. Miss Reynolds also spoke and showed pictures of the trip she made last summer to the United Nations as delegate from the lodges in this district. A crab feed is planned by the Columbia encampment for Friday evening. May 3, when George Ho ward of Canby, grand patriarch, will visit here. A new grill for the top of the stove in the IOOF hall kitchen has been secured and will be used for making hotcakes at the Boy Scout breakfast which will be served on Mothers Day, May 12. The scouts will sell tickets for the event the two Saturdays pr ?- ceeding the breakfast. Mother’s Tea Is Plan of Juniors May 4 was the date set for a mother-daughter afternoon tea at a meeting of the American Legion auxiliary juniors on Thursday, April 18, in the post club rooms. Reports were made on service activities. Old greeting cards are still wanted. Department president, Frances Grund, said in a letter that when she paid her official visit to Vernonia she was thrilled to have the juniors sing a welcome song, the words if which were especially written 'n her honor. The girls were sorry to learn that Ramona Robertson, first vice- president, was ill with the mea sles. Decorations, refreshments and invitations committees for the Saturday tea were appointed. Since all the members present volunteered for these assignments the absent members were given the clean-up committee. Plans will be completed at the May 2 meeting. Claracy and her mother, Mar garet Hartzell furnished th? pop ular refreshments of hot dogs and kool-aid. These were server] buffet style in the kitchen and were rapidly consumed with gus to. The girls asked Pete Brunsman if he would take the papers into Portland for th- 4-H clubs and he said he would be happy to. P Wikstrom and Mrs. Joe Roeser were in Portland Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Crawford spent Easter Sunday in Portland with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dowling from Vernonia were Easter Sun day dinner guests of his parents. Arby Mills cut his foot quite badly one day last week and was taken to the doctor for stitches. Some members of the MHC and some other good helpers worked at the cemetery one day last we“k cleaning up. Dave Banzer is still in the Good Samaritan hospital in Portland. The Bud Howrys were in Clats kanie Saturday evening. I Join Families Michael Alan Roediger receiv ed an especially hearty welcome last Wednesday. April 17 when he arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Roediger at Hills boro. He is the Ruedigers first son. but joins two sisters. He is also the first grandson for Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kasper. He is the sixth great-grandchild for Charles Hamilton. Other grand parents are Ed Roediger Sr., Scappoose and Mrs. Marie Krause of Hillsboro. Happiest man in Vernonia last Saturday was Lloyd Thomas who has been walking on air ever since receiving a telephone call that morning from his wife from El Segundo, California telling him that they were grandparents. A daughter arrived early that morn ing for their daughter and son- in-law, Mr and Mrs. Jim Ross. Vital statistics as to name and weight have not yet been learn ed. This is also the first great grandchild for Mrs. Alice Malm- sten. The stork played Easter Bunny just minutes after midnight Sun day morning to leave a 6 pound, 10 ounce red haired son at the Seaside hospital for Mr and Mrs. Larry Garner. Hr? has been nam ed Brad Eugene and joins a sister, Susan. Another Easter baby is the daughter who arrived at St. Vin cents hospital Sunday for Mr. and I' Mrs. Kenneth Anderson of Cedar Hills. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Forest Blount and Mr. and (Mrs. Connie Anderson of Vernon ia. Virgil Lance, soil conservation | consultant who is at West Ore gon’s office each Wednesday, was ! wearing an especially big smile this week because hr? was boast ing a new grandson. The young fellow is Darrell Brent, son of Lt. and Mrs. Ed Lance of Fort Lewis. Washington.
