Conditions in Kauai, Hawaii are
very similiar to those in Colum
bia county, according to Mrs.
Evelyn Giles, executive secretary
of the Kauai Tuberculosis and
Health association, who was the
guest of the Columbia county as
sociation Friday, June 1, at a
luncheon given in her honor at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. A.
Ridenout of Scappoose, which was
also attended by Darrold Proehl,
county association president.
Mrs. Giles told of the interest
of the island people in health con
ditions. She stated that for the
29,000 population of the Island,
there is a corps of seven health
nurses. They do a tuberculin
testing program in the high
schools and have mass x-ray sur
veys. They are also planning a
rehabilitation workshop on the
island.
Mrs. Giles, on the mainland
for a month, had attend d the an
nual meeting of the National Tu
berculosis association. She had
asked to visit two counties in Ore
gon for the purpose of observing
plans and pratices.
Columbia
county was one of the two select
ed.
