MAKE AN EARLY AMERICAN TABLE A reproduction of an early American table, with a variety of uses, can be made entirely of 2-inch lumber. Make the top from one piece of 2 by 10-inch lumber and two 2 by 12’s, and cut the other pieces as shown. Edge glue the top boards together under pressure. Use glue at all joints and assemble all parts with 2-inch No. 10 flat-head wood screws in * holes counterbored %-inch in diameter and %-inch deep. Assemble foot members with screws through the upright pieces into the edges of the flat pieces. Space each pair of legs with a 2 by 4 scrap and attach bottom ends centered on foot pieces and top ends to the 2 by 4 by 28-inch members, as shown. Invert the top and attach leg assemblies to it with screws through the 2 by 4 by 28-inch members. Install brace, square table and attach brace to each leg with screws set at an angle. Glue and drive %-inch dowel into all visible screw holes, and cut flush. Sand entire table, rounding all sharp edges before staining and varnish ing.
