APRIL 5, 1»5<J Annual Clinic Dated Here For Thursday Pre-School Children To Get Health Checks At Washington School The Parent-Teacher association of Vernonia, in conjunction with the local doctors and the Colum bia county health nurse. Miss Grace Roumagoux, is xponsoring its annual pre-school clinic at the Washington grade school between the hours of 9:00 a.tn. and 11:00 am., Thursday, April 12, 1956, m the arts and crafts room. Health record forms have been sent out to parents from the school which are to be filled out and brought into the clinic. Any one having a child who will enter kindergarten or first grade for the first time next fall who did not receive a blank may get one at the school office. The state law requires that all children have health examinations before entering school and if they do not get them at the clinic they must get them from their family doctor before the start of school. Members of the P.T.A. will serve coffee and light refresh - ments during the clinic. Mrs. Frank Serafin is chairman in charge of arrangements for the P T A. Candidate Makes First Office Try W. N. (Wally) Noakes of Ver nonia tosses his hat into the po litical ring for the first time with his Republican candidacy for Co lumbia county commissioner, which will be decided in the com ing May 18 primary election. A carpenter by trade, Noakes has resided in Vernoma for the past eleven years, contracting for himself up until four years ago. He is presently working on con struction and maintenance in the Long-Bell mill in Vernoma. Pre viously to coming to Vernonia, Noakes was a contractor in Port land. He has held no previous politi cal office. He states that the first duty of an officeholder, in his opinion, is to thoroughly sift and examine the problems before pursuing any course of action. Born in Charleston, Utah in 1899, Noakes has spent the la it 30 years in Oregon, after coming to Portland in 1926. Deadline Near on Registration for Primary; Final Date Is April 17 Residents of Vernonia are re minded that only ten more days remain for registering to vote in the primary election which will be held on May 18 The law pro vides that registration books must close 30 days before the election which is April 17. Voters may register now with Sam Hearing at the city hall. H-- is registrar for all four t Vernonia precincts and Mist. Also, for the conven ience of union members they may register at the union hall. How ever, this does not register them for the city election. That can be done only at the city hall. Because of the changes made in the registration laws at th" last session of the legislature, it is very essential for every voter to check and be sure he is prop erly registered in the precinct in which he lives. Effort is being made under the new law to cor rect slipshod voting proceedures which have been allowed in pre- vious years. A' resume of the present law follows: A voter must vote in the pro cinct in which he actually re sides and, if he moves from one precinct to another, he must re register with the county clerk. The 1955 amendments to the elec tion laws prohibit a voter who has moved to a new orccinct from-returning to his old precinct to vote. The new law provides also that each voter must sign his name in each of two dup'i- cate poll books to attest the fact that he is a resident of the pre- cinct in which he votes. Persons moving to a new pre cinct during the period when re registration is closed must ob tain a certificate of reregistration and subscribe to an oath in order to vote in the new precinct. Per sons absent from their home pre cinct on election day may ob tain a certificate of registration and vote in any other precinct of the state for state officers and if voting within their prop-r dis trict may also vote for district officers. Penalties are provided for persons violating the provi sions of the new law. A voter who will become of age after the boo0 close but be fore the date of the election may register now, also. Anyone in doubt as to whether they are correctly registered should check with Sam Hearing at once. The law is not designed to keep anyone from voting, but is to assure correct listings in poll books according to residency in the precinct. This will elimi nate possibility of duplicate reg istration, also.
