During the last - stages of the caterpillar development consider able egg-laying of one of the caterpillar parasites, the Ichneu mon fly, was observed. In check ing a trial on the effectiveness of malathion for caterpillar control at Elmer Loyd’s, Deer Island, it was found that nearly every caterpillar was carrying the at tached egg of the parasite. These eggs showed up as small whitish spots, most of them being attach ed to, or close to, the head of the caterpillar. The general absence of the moth and their nefarious egg lay ing should mean that we will have a considerable reduction in the numbers of the caterpillars next year. and that there is very little hori zontal movement around the post. The cost of materials for using the salt method of treating and cold soaking with pcntachloro- phenol, "penta’’ for short, is about the same. Since only ad ditional labor and time are in volved in using the penta treat ment, and the treatment is much more effective, Jeffries indicated that he felt that it would be worthwhile to plan and manage his farm post treating program in such a way that he could use penta.
