Mrs. John Kirk was prtsident of the Vernonia unit for the 1950- 1951 term and was elected presi dent of the council the next year and served until she moved front the county. SERVED TWO TERMS Mrs. Byron Kirkbride was elected president of the grade school unit for 1951-52 and the 1952-1953 terms. The high school unit was or ganized during ths 1951-1952 teim with Mrs. Bruce Bass as presi dent. When it was consolidated with th« grade school unit in the fall of 1952 Mrs. Art Davis was president. Mrs. Byron Knkbnde was retained as president of the new Vernonia PTA for the 1952- 1953 term. Mrs. L. L. Wells wa, elected for the 1953-1954 term o. office and is now serving as president of the Vernonia unit and vice-president of the county council. Vernonia’s PTA has many sig- nificant accomplishments tO it 3 credit: LUNCH PROGRAM FIRST 1. The school lunch program. (Canned surplus pears.) 2. The pre-school clinic hetd each y ar for children entering school the next fall. 3. Original sponsors of the Girl Scouts. 4. Driver's training program ob taining of audio-visual testing machines for the use of the school and community. 5. A suggestion by the Vernonia delegation to a county council meeting led to the project which resulted in the present much augmented and improved county health board. ADDITION URGED 6. Voters were urged to ap- prove use of funds that became available for the new addition to the Washington school. 7. Helped obtain ground for the new VUHS building and led pub lic sentiment to approve the build ing. 8. Sponsored visits of the x-ray mobile unit and the bloodmobile. 9. Made th? first annual Mother’s march on polio 1954 which added nearly $200 to the March of Dimes. 10. Scotch-lite tape on bicycles and safety instructions. 11. Urged members to vote at school elections.
