YESTERDAYS FIVE YEARS AGO From Th* Eagle. October 14. 1948 Art Davis won the I.O.O.F. lodge handicap gulf tournament and will receive a trophy for the accomplishment. This was the first tournament sponsored by the lodge. Douglas Tvacke told Lions club members future plans for the Ver nonia coal mine. It is hoped to have mining operations under way within the next two months. J.rol Moran won three ribbons at the Pacific International Live, stock Exposition, two of them for animals he exhibited and one for showmanship. TEN YEARS AGO From The Eagle. The names of five new candi dates for city council positions at the November election were filed by petition last Friday. They are: William V. Lindley. Robert N. Raymer, R L. Raymond. Ben Bennett and J. J. Grady. i missions and is now stationed in Texas as an instructor; Ckve Ro bertson received a medical dis charge from the army and is •ere working for the Nehalem Valley Motor Freight; James F. and Wil liam E. Byers sent an announc-. ment of their graduation from army advanced flying school as pilots. They are both luutenants in the air corps.
