March 4. 1948 New water rates for residents of the city will go into effect I with the next billing. An ordi nance calling for the increase was adopted Monday by the city council calling for a monthly mini mum of $2.00 as compared with the former minimum of $1.75. Effective Monday morning of this week was the sale of a busi. n.ss that brings Mr. and Mrs. Norman Nieman, formerly of Michigan, to Vernonia as owners of the Cozy Confectionery. N. B. Johnson, former owner, has had the business for a little over a year. J. W. Barney, city manager of iI Hillsboro, was engag d as guest speaker for the Lions club through arrangements made by Dr. H. E. I Schlegel. The speaker has been asked to tell points for and against the manager form of city government. TEN YEARS AGO From The Eagle, March 4, 1943 School children in Vernonia are being given hearing tests by Miss Rebecca Overstreet of the division of maternal and child health, Oregon State Board of Health. Local Victory gardeners may have the use of city lots without charge, it was decid d at the city council meeting Monday. To use the lots, gardeners are asked to obtain permission from the city recorder. There are an esti mated 25 spread over town. Low places in the city park athletic field are being leveled with soil and sand and s.edeci with grass by high school boys during physical education periods. Orle Robbins and Glenn Ely are directing the work. Dave Howard, who joined the arm/ air corps three weeks ago, has been stationed at D.nver, Colorado for basic training. Aviation Cadet, Clifford Ber- gerson, has graduated from the Rankin flying school at Tulare, California and has been trans ferred to the Lemore flying school for his basic training. FIFTEEN YEARS AGO From The Eagle, March 4. 1938 Work on the proposed new Mile bridge to replace the pres- ent steel-wood span over the Nehalem river at Riverview is anticipated soon. A crew has f been busy for two weeks setting stakes and surveying the new route of the highway and the n°w approaches. Since the first of the year hunt ing and angling licenses have been sold at Hoffman hardware totaling $615. It is estimated the number of licenses total about 250. R. A. Brambl tt, with his catch of a 12-pound, 15%-ounce steelhead, won the Hoffman Hardware steelhead derby for February. Senior class students who will participate in this year's play are: Fred Erv.n, LaVerne Thomp son, Ruby Condit, Sonny Scha- lock. Bill Thompson, Norman Crowder and Marjorie Lange.
