X THURSDAY, MAR. 5, 1953 THE EAGLE. VERNONIA, ORE. AROUND THE FARM c "/LSJTSL If you are planning to put up some fencing soon, here •» a sug gestion from Jack Sather, Clats kanie. For fencing cattle he has found barbed wire alone to be better than 30 inch woven wire topped with barbed wire. Cattle will pull down woven wire with their feet or will work their head in be tween the top of the woven wire and the adjoining barbed wire. Once they get their head in they push down on the woven wire so they can reach through. If sheep and cattle are to be controlled by the same fence, wo ven wire is the most satisfactory. A 42-inch or 48-mch woven wire might eliminate some of the prob lems experienced with cattle pushing the woven wire down. for dairy cattle. Making grass silage is quite a job and most farmers would like to have field choppers to help with the work. The big hitch is the investment required. A study made in New York state back in 1948 showed that if you try to save labor by pur chasing machinery you feed the machinery kitty. For example, it took a $10.75 machinery investment per cow when a loader and truck were used to make silage. Use of a field chopper stepped the machinery investment up to $31.56 per cow. The figures are old, but the com parison still applies. AllOUND HOME...
