THE PEOPLE From the O/fice| Desk % u By Marvin Kamholz e A call is made to tne telephone switchboard and a voice asks for a city fire truck. A home is afire and help to fight the blaze is needed so a fire truck is sent out on its way—outside city limits. This is a situation typical of several that have arisen with in the past year or so. There will no doubt be like instances in the future when help will b? asked of city equipment to answer fire calls ’and thereby arises a problem that must have a definite answer. There is only one logical answer. The fire fighting equipment owned by the City of Vernonia was purchased from money which came from revenues provided by people who reside within the city. No part of this financing came from tax money paid by property outside the limits of the town. This one point, alone, places high priority upon the equip ment to restrict its us? for city residents only. They have paid for it. It is theirs. It should be I held for their use when needed. , However, thre are two pro- j cedures that may be followed by people living outside city limits who wish fir? protection. One is provided in a city ordinance which sets forth the regulations that ar? to be followed in signing a contract which legally allows a call for fire equipment. The other procedure is that whereby a rural fire district is formed, small tax levied and equipment purchased. Details concerning the ordin- ance can be obtained at the city hall. Likewise, information on the district set-up is available for the consideration of property owners who may be interested. Meanwhile, fire equipment should be restricted for us? with in the city only and the city council should take a definite stand to enforce that restriction. It takes just a few minutes to make this handy grit, or oyster shell self feeder for poultry. All you need is a nail keg and a tin can. Saw three inches off the bottom end of one stave of the keg for the outlet. Then, use a one-pound coffee can for the feed trough. Cut this down the seam—then back along the bottom three inches. Then bend the sides out to form "wings.” Finally, shape the scoop-like bottom of the can so it fits into the keg opening, tack the "wings” to the keg, and you have a feeder! •• : I This week at SAFEWAY... If this dam is built it will destroy Celilo Falls, the greatest scenic and beauty spot in Oregon and the last remaining falls on the Columbia River. The people of Oregon do not want the dam built at The Dalles. A poll was taken and over seventy per cent said. “Leave Celilo Fails as it now is; build the dam some other place." Celilo Falls has a scenic beauty and grandeur that makes it one of the great attrac tions of the Northwest. During the vacation months hundreds of cars stop every day to admire the falls and watch the Indians fishing from the rocks as they have for centuries. Celilo Falls is also one of the richest sources where the diff.’rent tribes come THE EAGLE. VERNONIA. ORE. THURSDAY.
