Office Desk Only five days remain before voters will go to th ’ polls to decide the 1952 general election. That isn’t much time to decide how to mark the ballot if con siderable thought has not al ready been given to the candi dates to be chos.n and to the amendments and r e f e r e n dum measures. Most ballot measures have been giv.n wide publicity, both fur and against, and the candi dates have made their appear ances, either in person or through the medium of n.wspaper and radio advertising. For all of this th’ final de cision will come nejft Tuesday. But there is one point that needs clarification on the office of county judge. Two candidates seek the position, John W. Whip ple and Charlie Ramp, About the latter, the stat ment has been made that he has the en- endorsement of all labor in Co lumbia county. Such is net the case. IWA Local 5-37, V.rncnia. has not endorsed any candidate to date and does not intend to make any such endorsements, so Local off.cials say. All candidates have been giv.n the opportunity to express themselves before the membership, but no offic al en dorsement has been given. On the sam? subject, C. R. Ha'lberg, Rainier has checked with other union groups in the county and has been told that no endorsem nts have been given. A statement by a candidate that he does have such endorsements is misleading to voters. Cons - quently the ballot of this wr.tur will be marked for John W. Whipple who is known to b- capable of maintaining the good standing of county affairs. O mg will be heavy has consider I able basis on fact as is pointed out by Register and Vote, Incor porated. a committee devoted tg the task of urging people to* register and cast the« ballots. In the state, registration totals 851,516, « increase of just over 100,000 registrants above Ore gon’s previous general election in 1950. This tabulation represents 82 Der cent of the estimated eli gible voters in Oregon and com pares favorably with the 68 per cent registration figures of IJoO, which had been the modern cUy record in the state. Republicans took a slight lead in registration this year, num bering 421,681, against the Demo crats 416,589. This reverses the 1950 registration when the Demo crats led by 17.199 voters. Of the Oregon total registration, some 13.000 are independents, progressives, socialists, proh.bi- tionists or miscellaneous regis trants. Because of anticipated h avy i voting, people who can go to the polls early are urged tu do so in order to avoid a last minut’ i rush. o TREHARNE — Cort Siedelman, Pete Felong, John Siedelman and Edwina Siedelman motored to Mad'^is, Oregon Wednesday on a business ai*l pleasure trip.
