« TMURSDAY, OCT. 30, 1952 THE EAGLE, ORE. I Dinner Marks Occasion VERNONIA, AROUND THE FÄRM>".^° Back in 1948 Thurman Jeffries, Yankton, used the salt treat ment on green Douglas fir posts M-t out in his raspberry field. Most of the posts were 6 to 8 inches in diameter. This summir Jeffries took out part of his raspberry field and ihe posts pulled out of this field pave us a lot of good information BRYSON STATE SENATOR Hunter Breaks Ankle Friday At Home in Taylorville about the effectiveness of this salt treatment. The salt treatment is actually a mixture of corrosive sublimate and common table salt. Some of the mixture is applied to th? post by putting it in a hole bored at the gravel line. The theory is that the chemical will move out into the wood and prevent decay. Jeffries posts showed that the I chemicals movid down the post very well but it moved only a short distance to th- sides from the holes where it was originally ; put. The result was that about one-third of the post was solid but the remainder was badly rotted. Th'* chumical moved about two inches to each side of the hole where it was originally put. Here are Jeffries comments on post treatment as a result of his experience. He feels that the salt treatment is not effec tive unless several holes are bored around th? post and the treatment split up among the various holes. He would suggest at least 3 holes for a 6-inch post. Four might be better. Considering the time and trou ble <n bonn« the additional holes, Jeffries suggests that pealing, curing and treating posts with a cold soak of “penta” solution ELECT A VETERAN NATAL — Mr. and Mrs. Sam Devine enjoyed a turkey dinner 1 last Sunday at the Gillespie home in Taylorvill?. The occasion was Mr. Gillespie’s birthday. Mrs. Clair Devine and child ren motored to Delena last Fri day to visit her mother, Mrs. Gordon. might b? better wh re a large number of posts will be needed. He makes one more point. The tops on his salt treated posts were beginning to show a lot of rot. "Penta" treatment applied to seasoned posts can be also applied to the tep to prev nt rot. A swe?t tooth for a ripe strawberry gets young coyot.'s into trouble at Adolph Anlicker’s, Deer Island. Following strawberry harvest young coyotes visit the field in the early evening to pick up re. maining berries. The pups are just getting big enough to forage for themselves at that time of year and the fruit is easy pick ings. Anlicker us?s a special high power .22 caliber rifle and gets right out in the field. Engrossed in gobbling up berries the young coyotes become car less and fail to notice a man standing per fectly still. They will occasion ally raise up their head to look around and that is when they line up with the business end of Anlicker’s rifle. [ ; | , . * I TREHARNE r Ted Marlott ; guests of her aunt, Mrs. H.
