Members
of
the
Pomona
Grange were royally entertained
by Natal Grange Saturday, Feb
ruary 2, in their hall, with most
of the county Granges represent
ed.
The county health set-up came
in for considerable discussion,
with possibilities of having im
provement in this matter, in
cluding a sanitarian, nurse and
county doctor for full or part
time. It was stated that we now
have no inspection of restaurants
or food handlers. Mrs. Ione Back-
lund was appointed to represent
Pomona Grange at the health
meeting scheduled for the even
ing of March 13 at the Court
house.
Youth recreation also was dis
cussed, with a meeting planned
for Beaver Homes Grange Hall
on the afternoon of February 25
to consider the possibilities of
supervised recreation.
This is
sponsored by the extension ser
vice, but will be supported, it is
hoped, by the Granges and other
organizations.
The 4-H dormitory which is
now getting underway on the
county fairgrounds was discussed
with the Granges asked to sup
port this effort in their usual
generous manner, with donated
labor and other help.
The county Grange history
which is planned as a memorial
to the achievements of the
Grange is being assembled. Also
plans are going forward to cele
brate the 50th anniversary of
Pomona Grange later this year.
The event will be planned by th?
historian, Pearl Becker, Pomona
lecturer, Mrs. Erickson and the
lecturers

Granges.
Guests during the days were
Mr. and Mrs. Ray W. Gill of
Portland.
Mr. Gill, who was
formerly State Master, is now a
member of the state Grange ex
ecutive committee.

Social Security
“Am I self-employed?” That
is the question most often asked
about Social Security now, ac
cording to Everell Cummins, field
representative of the Portland
social security office.
“If you work for yourself in
an unincorporated trade or busi
ness and have net earnings of at
least $400 per year, you are self-
employed under the Social Se
curity Act,” said Cummins. He
explained that farm income, earn
ings of most professionals, and
investment income do not count
toward social security credit. All
other self-employment earnings
up to $3600 are taxable at the
rate of-2i<»%.
According to the representative,
the next question is, “what will
I get out of social security?” The
answer given is: “Up to $80 per
month for a self-employed per
son retiring after age 65; up to
$10 for his wife; and up to $150
a month for a widow with minor
children.”
The representative urged every
one wanting more information to
visit or write the Portla -d office.
