AT THE CHURCHES 41,444 Convicted On Traffic Rules Oregon courts and the secretary of state’s office cracked down on Oregon drivers last year to the tune of 41,444 moving traffic vio lation convictions, plus several thousand driving license suspen sions. Driving while intoxicated re sulted in the highest number of suspended licenses—2,740. all of which resulted after court con viction. Five hundred and eight drivers lost licenses for reckless driving and another 282 were sus pended for violation of the state’s basic speed rule law. Other sus pensions were given out on court convictions or discretionary action on 46 different charges. The state department's driver improvement program lifted li censes of 74 drivers, after holders were interviewed because of ex cessive violations and accidents but failed to show any behind- the-wheel improvement. In 1950, 26 licenses were called in through the improvement program. In releasing the annual sum mary, Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry said that the state plans to continue its g"t tough policy with drivers who fail to obey the state's safety rules. "Drivers," he said, “must be made to realize that driving is a privilege, not a right.” Vegetable mulch put around garden plants for the winter is not primarily to protect plants from fr ezing but to avoid the damage that comes with rapid temperature changes.
