So far the Pebble Creek area
of the Nehalem valley is the
only spot where tansy has been
found in the Vernonia area, but
st would be very easy for the
seeds to work down the water

proper and folks in that area will
want to keep a sharp lookout.

There are plantings of this long
growing shrub with its bright
red berries along both sides of
the courthouse at St. Helens.
This year Fred Adams, janitor,
sprayed these shrubs in April
with 25% DDT in summer oil.
It has done an excellent job of
controlling webworms and the
shrubs are looking fine now.
DDT in summer oil is available
at feed and seed stores.

Bloat in dairy cattle is most
likely to occur when the pastures
runs heavy to clover. With the
warm season coming on we will
find the clover increasing in ir
rigated pastures. If grass was
not planted with the clover or if
a poor stand was obtained, bloat
may be somewhat of a problem.
Generally if there is a good
mixture of grass and clover the
danger of bloat is greatly reduced.
The coarser, stiffer grass blades
seem to promote belching or
prevent the fermentation that
causes bloating.
Occasionally in a newly seeded
pasture we will find the clover
developing much faster than the
grass and until the grass catches
up, livestock should be watched
for bloat.
Of all the old suggestions for
preventing bloat these are all
good. First, never put cows on
the pasture hungry. Fill them
up with hay or keep them on the
pasture so they never get hungry.
Plenty of water, salt and a
chance to eat some dry hay
from a rack in the pasture are
good suggestions.
The latest idea is to clip a
strip of the pasture every few
days. The clipped forage will
become dry or partially so and
the cattle will move to this strip
and pick up enough of this dry
pasture clipping to prevent bloat.
It would take 1,900,000 box
cars, which would reach across
the United States five times to
carry the nation’s lumber pro
duction in one year.

Don't keep putting off the need for glasses. If you act

We are fortunate in Columbia
county in having tansy ragwort
fairly well under control. Heavy
infestations are found only in
a small part of the Delena area.
Anyone who knows the grief this
weed will cause when it be
comes bad and the land becomes
heavily seeded will certainly
realize we are still in a good
position and should be enthusias
tic about carrying on this fight.
Tansy ragwort will soon be out
