TOPICS OF THE TOWN Listed among the names of iha 317 students who earned honor roll rating during the summer session at Oregon College of Edu cation at Monmouth was Ma thilde Bergerson. More t'*an 42 per cent of OCE’s 750 summer session students were included on the roll. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Johnson of Jefferson spent the week end at the Frank McCabe home. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. MacDonald and son, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Mess ing and Mrs. Marie Frazee drove to Mt. Hood Sunday to pick huckleberries with Mr. and Mrs. Harold McEntire who were al ready camped there. The group picked 33 gallons of berries Sun day. The McEntires returned home Monday after having camp ed there since Wednesday of last week. Page and son returned Sunday Tram Los Angeles where they had been for two weeks during his vacation. Mrs. Claude Knapp has pur chased the property on North Street formerly owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cicero, and will make her home there. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wasser and twin daughters have moved to Sutherlin to make their home. FRI. visited in Centralia, Washington over the week end with Mrs. Cates’ sister and also with old- time friends, Mr. and Mrs. Al Larson. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Larson and children returned here Sun day after spending a week’s va cation visiting friends and rela tives in the Willamette valley. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Woodruff of San Francisco arrived here Wednesday to visit relatives in cluding her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brady, and her sisters and families, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph DeVaney and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ritz and daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff left for Forest Grove and Portland Fri day to visit other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Spofford Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Spof ford, Jr., motored to Pendleton for the Round-up Friday and Saturday and returned home Sun day. On the way home they visited McNary dam and Maryhill Museum. Mr. and Mrs. Lou Choate were among those from here who at tended the Pendleton Round-up last week end. Mrs. Bill Horn was in Portland Friday of last week where she attended a school of instruction of the American Cancer Society. The school drew attendance from all over the state. Going to Astoria to fish for salmon Tuesday were Cecil John son, Jack Nance, Edison Aldrich and R. M. Aldrich. Three fish were landed, two by Johnson and once by Nance. Among those who attended the Shrine football game in Portland Saturday evening were Ed Ade, Mrs. George Peters and Mrs. Herb Taylor and their children. Tick Bass, Henry Bass and Ralph Sturdevant. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Simmons of Forest Grove spent Sunday with Mrs. Simmons' brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Noah. Bill O’Brien is spending a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald O'Brien, before he leaves for the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Lile (for merly Anna Belle Dunn) of Wattsonville, California are the parents of a daughter. The baby is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dunn. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Wilson and Judy spent Sunday at Sea side. A farewell party in honor of Mrs. Don O’Brien was given by Mrs. L. Tallman and Mrs. Cecil Cole. Mrs. O’Brien received many lovely gifts. Yesterdays FIVE YEARS AGO From The Eagle, August 30, 1945 The need, which has been long apparent for at least one dentist in this area was voiced Monday evening at the Vernonia Booster club meeting at the Legion hall and steps were taken to obtain that service for this community. The depth of 4456 feet was passed last week by drillers of the Texas company at Clatskanie No. 1 wildcat oil test well. Effective September 1 OPA will no longer require the reins pection of tires for commercial vehicles by the central truck tire inspection stations. Beginning on September 1 there will be no validation by a central inspection station for tires for commercial vehicles. The paving of approximately a mile of unpaved city streets is slated to start this week, now that sufficient gravel for the mile of work has been crushed by the road district 16 crew. TEN YEARS AGO From The Eagle, August 30. 194<: A new panel delivery truck was purchased and placed in service this week by Sam and Bob’s Grocery and market. The new flag pole recently pur chased by grade school district 47 is to be raised Saturday it was learned Monday. Completion ot a cement foundation and work on the pole has' been necessary before it could be raised. Fishermen were urged to send in catch report cards after each fishing trip. Cards are obtained from the sporting goods stores and should be sent to the Game Commission office in Portland. City officials are busy, starting Monday, repainting pedestrian safety lanes on the business sec tion of Bridge street. FIFTEEN YEARS AGO From The Eagle. August 30. 1935 J. W. Brown of Vernonia won two grand championships for his chickens at the Columbia county fair last week, also nine firsts, eight seconds and one third. This is the first time in the history of the fair that two grand cham pionships, on a male and femalj have gone to one person. He exhibited Rhode Island Reds. Julia Wrangler, candidate for queen of the airport dedication, still leads the fi> Id. according to reports of E. S. Thompson, com mittee in charge. Members of the boys and girls band were guests of the county fair Saturday, Vernonia day, and entertained record crowds at the fair during the day and even ing, playing under their director, C. R. Watts. Allotment of $4,617 of WPA funds to complete the Vernonia airport was announced Monday 2 Couples See Calif. Points RIVERVIEW — Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Uoyd and Mr. and Mrs Jewell Lloyd and family returned home Sunday evening from a vacation trip to California where they visited at many of the scenic viewpoints. Mr. and Mrs. Winks Parker and son, Leo, of Medford visit ed at the Anna Roberts home one, day last week. Jeffrey Ryan Mills of Port land visited his grandmother, Mrs. Alice Mills, last weak. Mrs. Parson attended a 10- day camp meeting at Troutdale recently where Rev. loe Tom Tate was the evangelist. Mrs. Anna Roberts and Mr. Olin Robbins made a business trip to Salem Tuesday. by E. J.
