Social Security Answers to Your Questions QUESTION: I have been work ing in employment covered by the Social Security Act for the past 11 years. My husband has been working under social secur ity for 13 years. When we are both 65 and no longer working, which benefits will I receive— my benefits as a worker, or as a wife? ANSWER: You will receive either the retirem nt benefits you have earned through your own work or your wife’s benefit of one-half the amount your hus band receives, whichever of these two benefits will give you the larggr monthly payment. You cannot receive them both; the Social Security Act permits the payment only of the larger bene fit.
