Jerry, of Amarillo, Texas arrived in Vernonia recently for a visit with Mrs. Ray’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Bayley, and Raymond Bayley who attends Pacific Uni versity at Forest Grove. Mrs. Ray and son returned to their home after spending several days here. Mr. and Mrs. Jess D. Hathaway who reside in a trailer house at Trehame drove to Pacific City ast week end and returned here Monday. They found the weather more agreable there than here. Louis H. Cates returned home Sunday, January 8 from Spring field, Missouri where he was called December 29 to the bed- fide and death of his brother, W. A. Cates. On his return he rtopped at Denver, Colorado for a short visit with his daughter, Delphine, and family. Albert Childs, city recorder, has been confined to his home over a week due to illness. Mrs. Maxine Miller is acting tem porarily as recorder for the city. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Landers are the parents of a girl born Thursday at the Portland Os teopathic hospital. She has been oamed Kristen Ann and weighed »even pounds, seven ounces. Miss Pat Lobdell was taken to the Good Samaritan hospital, Portland Monday for an opera tion. She was taken to town by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Morgan. JAN. 22-23 The date was definitely set this week for the troop court of honor for Vernonia Boy Scouts for the evening of Monday, Jan uary 23, Lloyd Quinn, Scout master, said. The event, which is unusual for the Vernonia troop will take place at the Washing ton school at 8 p.m. Local boys have been advanced for the work they have accom plished at district courts in the past, the Scoutmaster said, and this court will be the first held for members of the troop here only. Chairman of the court will be either Ralph Shumm or P. Beryl Morris. All parents, friends and interested people are invited. Kenneth Parker ■will be ad vanced to first class Scout rank Monday. Private Albert Huntley, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Huntley, Ver nonia, a member of the 79th Engineer Maintenance company in Kyoto, Japan, is now enjoying a seven day leave to visit the 584th Engineer Construction Group at Tokyo. Private Huntley entered the Army at Portland December 26, 1948 and completed infantry basic training at Fort Ord, Cali fornia. He received orders for assignment in the Far East Com mand during April, 1949 and has been assigned to his present or ganization since May 21. The 79th Engineer Maintenance company has charge of the main tenance of all heavy construction equipment, such as bulldozers, large trucks and cranes, for all of central Honshu, largest of the Japanese islands. The meeting will be held at the 1WA hall, beginning at 1:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. the meeting will be thrown open to the public for the showing of a film on poli- tical, action and talks by Howard Morgan, former state legislature, on the subject of the proposed re-apportionment of the state legislature and congressional dis tricts of the state, and by Joe Miller of Seatt'e, Executive sec retary of the CVA committee, on the Columbia Valley administra tion legislation.
