Canning Help
Appreciated
Paul Gordon, grade school su-
perintendent has expressed his ap-
preciation for the help given the
district a short time ago in pro
cessing a shipment of pears for
use later in the school lunch room.
His statement follows:
“Several days ago we received
from the Supervsor of Hot Lunches
in Oregon. 280 boxes of the finest
quality of Bartlett pears, with
instructions to use 30 boxes fresh
and 250 boxes for canning pur
poses. We were very appreciative
cf this very fine surplus com
modity but were unable, from the

The $4.506 quota includes only
Columbia county’s part in the Ore
gon chest and dees not include
individual participating agencies
such as the Boy Scouts within the
county. These will be assigned
to the total quotas of the indivi
dual cities.
The county quota has been divid
ed as follows: St. Helens $2.254.
Clatskanie, Rainier and Vernonia.
8608 each, and Scappoose $428.
Articles of incorporation and by
laws were adopted by the group
and it was decided to carry present
officers until the first meeting in
February.
lunch funds available, to have
1,000 gallons or more pears com
mercially processed. I appealed
to the Vernonia Elementary P.T.A.
for assistance. Mothers, fathers
and friends responded with such
enthusiasm that not a pear was
lost.
“I wish to express here my
profound admiration of the mas
terful way in which the group was
organized and accomplished this
difficult though worthy enterprise.
The Parent-Teachers association
and the mothers and fathers of
this community are to be congrat
ulated for their efforts in pro
cessing this commodity for the
future use of the lunch room
children of Vernonia. It is this
type of spirit and cooperative
effort that makes our country a
nobler and more democratic na
tion.
I am very grateful to
and every mother and father who
gave their time an I I should I ke

thanks to Mrs. Johnson. P.-T.A.
president, who organized the group
and to Mrs. Pete Hing and Mrs.
Frank Morris who stayed with us
every day and every night and
supervised the canning process
Mrs. Morris also came back the
final evening and prepared several
gallons of pear butter which I
know will be appreciated.
Again my sincere thanks to the
