THE 3 THURSDAY, SEPT. 22, 1949 EAGLE, AROUND THE FARM A few days ago I sat down with T. S. Thompson, Clatskanie, and talked over the past season’s tansy ragwort control program. Thompson was employed by the county for a period of about one month this summer to help the farmers get rid of tansy ragwort. TNI PIRFfCT GIFT C FOR FATHER! If he's a Sportsman! An Outdoorsman! County Extension Agent We certainly take our hat off to the job he did in hunting out this weed and working with folks to get rid of it. One thing we talked about was the area in which we have now found tansy ragwort. During the past two weeks several tansy plants have been found in the dikeland west of Clatskanie. One plant was found on the Ansel Salmi farm in Woodson. A few days later Ken and Roy Beeson on the Magruder district found two plants. Insofar as we now know this is the western limit of the weed in Columbia County. Finding these weeds makes a reality our fears that this tansy ragwort would find its way down Beaver Creek onto the dikeland. The weed has worked back into the hill country out of Delena and Thompson reports tansy rag wort found as far back as the Lost Creek Schoo) and the Apiary School. From the Hudson area it has worked over toward the Fernhill country within a mile of the Fernhill School. We previously mentioned find ing the weed in the Beaver Homes, Shilo Basin, and Deer Island sec tions which is as far south as it has yet been found. Oregon You Hotpoint’s Amazing 10-Year Protection Plan SES This pait »eason has shown that tansy ragwort can be controlled. This one year’s work has by no means completed the job but by 4 or 5 years of effective work such as we have just seen, this weed can be brought under con trol. The record of this weed’s spread we have just accounted is reason enough for extreme diligence in watching for it and destroying it when ever it is found. I don’t think I would have believed it myself if I hadn't seen it, but the phosphate plots we put on ladino clover at Ralph Mc Kee’s, Vernonia, last fall showed up very plain all summer and still show very strong. One of the biggest stickers to getting started in poultry is the cost of housing. When the cost of constructing a laying house starts getting around $3 per hen it’s time to do some thinking on how the birds are goipg to pay even the interest on that sort cf an invest ment. L. O. Gillham, Vernonia, built a very nice house with rough lum ber he sawed in his own small saw mill. It has been found that a good laying house does not need to be a very fancy affair. The care and management of the birds are much more important than drop siding and window glass when it comes to successful poul try farming.
