County Court, Alcoa Sign Lease

such type precious metal is dis­
covered by the company, the court
must be notified and the county
has a right to these metals.
“The financial arrangements un­
der the lease are rather involved.
“Under the arrangments, Alcoa
will pay to the county an annual
payment of 15c per acre of real
property for the first five years,
50c per acre for the next five
years and $1 per acre for the
remaining 40 years. This amount
is payable annually in advance, on
or before January 10 of each year.

A lease signed Wednesday by
the Columbia county court and
officials of the Alcoa Mining com.
pany granted mineral rights to
nine parcels of land in the coun­
ty mostly around Columbia City
and Yankton, to the company for
a period of 50 years.
The mining firm is reported to
have paid $59,100 for the nine
pieces, according to the St.
Helens Sentinel-Mist. Other terms
of the lease as reported by the
paper included:
"Under terms of the lease, Alcoa
gamed a right to remove all ores,
minerals and substances that are
a part of or that are in any way
related to the mineral ores com­

“In addition, the company is to
pay to the county “royalty” pay­
ment of 20c per ton of 2,240
pounds of marketable ore mined in
any of the nine parcels. Railroad
bills of lading will be used to
verify the weights.
“The county in turn will re­
fund the payments on the real
property to the mining as the
royalty payments from the ore
come in.
In other words, the
company may deduct the amount
paid for the land from the total
on the 20c per ton of ore until
such time as $50 per acre has been
deducted. This gives the county
right to any or all of the pro­
perty at the end of the 50 years
or at such time as the Alcoa com­
pany moves out of the territory.”
The effects of old age appear
earlier in very hot regions.

Stores here where hunting and
fishing licenses are issued are
making a charge for the service of
issuing the licenses, it was pointed
out this week after some com­
plaint had been voiced because of
the new procedure this year.
Chapter 447, Oregon Laws 1949,
provides that effective July 16 the
following charges «hall be made
in addition to the fee prescribed by
law for hunting and fishing li­
censes. Said sums shall be re­
tained by the authorized agency as
compensation for its services in
issuing the licenses. Twenty-five
cents shall be charged for each
license of $5 or more and 10 cents
shall be charged for each license
of less than $5.
Hardware Firm Adds
New Line to Store
Announced last week was the
addition of a line of furniture
to the merchandise displayed by
Brunsman Hardware and Electric.
Word of the addition was released
by Pete Brunsman, owner of the
store. He stated that a full line
of furniture was available includ­
ing bedroom suites, dav and chair
sets, occasional chairs, Simmons
mattresses and smaller furnish­
ings for the home.
Deer tags will be made avail­
able locally today, September 1,
for the 1949 season, it was also
announced.

completed an agenda calling for a
meeting with each of the home
economic ext msion groups in the
county and sessions with 4-H
leader groups.
Miss Paterson worked in Co­
lumbia county a month before of­
ficially taking over her new du­
ties on August 15.
The new home demonstration
agent came here after two weeks
at Oregon State college, where
she was given special training.
She has been working for the
Oregon state extension service
since March.
