The meet ing was held at the D. E. Laird residence. The plans call for two six-team leagues with team bowling to be held on Wednesday and Thursday of each week beginning Wednes day. September 14. Another meeting will be held at the home of Winston Walker Aug ust 26 at 8 p.m. AU persons interested in bowling this season are asked to attend, especially those who did not play in the League last year. Local People Asked to Help Needy Family The assistance of local people is indicated by a letter sent The Eagle a few days ago by Mrs. A. E. Jennings. She writes: "’Dear Marvin: I have heard of a family at Monument that needs hrJp. The husband is a veteran and is in the hospital for some braid trouble. There are 12 children from 2 to 17 and another coming. A layette is needed and «hoes, toys and clothes of all sizes. I know the hearts of our town are warm when they know of such needs. I am sending a carton today, but no shoes nor toys. This is one of our American fam ilies and a soldier’s too. Millions for foreignors, must we forget our own? Bible says no! Yours, Mrs. A. E. Jack Sheeley Injured Seriously by Blast Jack Sheeley, son of Lester Sheeley and former school stu dent here, was seriously injured about two weeks ago while work ing for the J. C. Montag company on construction of a power line up the North Santiam river. Failure of a powder monkey to warn Jack of danger from the blast caused the injury which resulted in breaking his right leg in four places above the knee and three places below. His pelvis, knee joint and ankle were not injured. He will be in a cast for five or six months and it will be about a year before he will be able to walk. He is in the Salem Me morial hospital and is out of dan ger and does not have any pain. New Residents Welcomed To Home in Riverview RIVERVIEW — We wish to welcome some new neighbors this week. They are Mr. and Mrs. Elgus Frank and family who have moved here on First street. Mrs. Jewell Lloyd underwent a appendicitus operation Monday at the Physicians and Surgeons hospital in Portland. She is get ting along fine. Mrs. Marie Mc- Kenny is taking care of the Lloyd children. Lumber Demand Forces Big Order Increase Demand for Douglas fir lum ber during July forced orders 25 million feet a week above pro duction according to H. V. Simp son. executive vice president of West Coast Lumbermen’s associa tion. The lumber official said there was a general strengthening of demand as mid-summer home and construction building hit its stride. Orders for July averaged 149,- 926,000 board feet weekly, Simp son stated, while production lag ged behind, due to vacations and shutdowns for repairs, averaging only 125.090.000 board feet a week. Fishhawk Bridge Topic For St. Helens Visit Board Choses School Head Floyd Light, superintendent of Sandy union high school for the past six years, assumed his duties as superintendent of St. Helens schools Tuesday of last week. His appointment to succeed Wallace McCrae was announced at the reg- ular semi-monthly meeting of the school board. McCrae resigned August 1 to become school su perintendent at Pendleton. Light, who has had wide teach ing experience in Oregon, was su perintendent of schools at Drain for 10 years, at Tangent for four BIRKENFELD — A. R. Mills, J. R. Bennett, Howard Jones, R. L.
