A Week with a Girl-stater
By Mary Ann Clark
Before I tell you of anything
that happened at Girl’s State,
let me explain just what it is.
It is a group of girls that meet
and study how our city, county
and state government is run. It
is sponsored by the Legion Aux
iliary for this purpose.
Upon arrival at Salem Monday,
we were registered and were given
a packet with a pin in the shape
of Oregon, a name badge and a
booklet of songs. Governor Doug
las MacKay spoke briefly to us
on the importance of knowing how
our government is run.
Tuesday we elected city and
county officers in addition to
choosing county candidates for
all the state officers. I was in Duz
county and resided at Salport while
Betty Jane Snook, the other Girl
stater from here, lived in Boon
Town of Friendship county.
Wednesday the State Party Con
vention (Nationalist and Federal
ist) was held and we chose our
party candidates for the state
offices. That afternoon the gen
eral election was held.
Thursday morning found us in
a party meeting again—to elect
our senators and representatives.
We all went over to the capitol
for the very impressive inaugera-
tion ceremony afterward.
The
president of the senate was in
charge and asked different re
presentatives and senators to es
cort the newly elected officers to
the rostrum. Governor Pat Bell-
mar, of Cascade Locks, gave her
farewell address and Pat McCul-
touch of Gresham, her innaugeral
address. In the evening Mayor
Dorothy McCullough Lee of Port
land was with us and talked to us
on the importance of studying the
government and also she gave
a brief history of Oregon Girl’s
state.
On Friday we toured the capital.
Betty’ and I were fortunate to go
to the dome and we saw all the
beautiful and interesting things
the capital has to offer to sight
seers. We also had county pic
tures taken and one large group
picture. In the afternoon we had
a session of bills that were in
troduced. We had a governor’s
banquet in honor of Pat and the
traditional theme of Dogpateh was

used as she was from that county.
Court was held Saturday morn
ing. First was a naturalization
ceremony and then a breach of
promise suit. We adjourned to
the supreme court building where
Justice George Rossman of the
State Supreme Court spoke to us
on the judical department.
We had various other evening
activities which included a recep
tion, a style show, choosing of
Girl’s Nation candidate (study na
tional gov’t in Washington, D.C.)
a stunt night (a stunt from each
county), and an impressive can
dlelight vesper service.
Betty Jane and I wish to ex
press our sincere heart-felt thanks
to the Rebekah Lodge and the
Legion Auxiliary for sponsoring us
to Girl’s State for this week
packed full of enjoyment.
The first bicycle was ade in
Scotland in 1840.
Write Right
Veterans finding it necessary
to correspond with the veterans
administration are urged by the
VA to "write right’* in order to
get prompt service.
Because VA files contain mil
lions of records of veterans and
their dependents, letters contain
ing insufficient information are
almost impossible to match with
the correct file and answer.
Just as an example one VA
regional office in the Pacific
Northwest has 2500 Johnsons,
2100 Smiths, 1200 Jones and 1500
Andersons. A large number of
them have common first names,
such as John, Charles, Donald,
William, James and Carl.
Complicating the task is the
heavy volume of letters which
the VA receives. The agency’s
annual volume of incoming mail
runs well over one hundred mil
lion pieces of correspondence.
Therefore, the VA says, it is
important that each veteran iden-
tify himself fully when writing to
the VA. He should include his
full name, service number, com
plete address and C,number, if
one was assigned, or N-number, if
the letter concerns National Ser
vice Life Insurance.
Veterans should not write to
the VA in Washington, D.C., the
VA also warned.
Instead, they
should write to the nearest VA
regional office in their state. In
surance inquiries from veterans
living in the Pacific Northwest
should be addressed to the In
surance Service, VA District Of
fice, Exchange Building, Seattle,
4, Washington.
