The Vernonia Eagles softball team trounced the Optimist club of St. Helens 22-5 at the City Park Tuesday night in a league con test that gives manager B. Cline's aggregation a 4 won and 4 lost record for the first half of the league race with two games yet to play. Darrel Rose, making his first start on the pitching slab for Vernonia, hurled good ball after a shaky first inning when the The Optimists tallied 3 runs. Fugles went ahead to stay in their half of the opening frame scoring 5 times. Rose retired the visitors in rider in the second and the Eagles put the game in the bag with a wild spree which netted 12 uns and made the score 17-3 g< ng into the third. Jack Nance, Ray Brandow and George Carr led the Eagles hit parade with Rose assisting his own cause with a long triple. The Vernonia club will meet the Ramblers at St. Helens tonight, Thursday, and will swing into action on the home tot next Tues day against the V.F.W. team. VERNONIA, ORE. Tillamook Golfers Win Over Vernonia Sunday The Vernonia Golf and Country club team, about 30 strong were handed a defeat last Sunday at Tillamook when they met an Al derbrook Country club team and were downed 50 to 16. Golfers making the trip were served din ners and their hospitality was appreciated by everyone. A return match will bring the Alderbrook players here in the near future. Club Finals to Be Played Sun Play remaining in the Vernonia Golf and Country club finals for the club championship will be completed Sunday when Kent Bauersfeld will meet Tom Bateman to decide the top golfer in the championship flight. Other matches to be played ip the 1st, 2nd and 3rd flights arc: Bob Kings vs. Jack Anderson; Kenneth Anderson vs. Cecil John son. 2nd and Lloyd Quinn vs. Geo. Robbins, 3rd. Bill Horn won the 4th flight by defeating Wesley Bolmeier and A. R. Elwell of Rainier defeated C. A. Store Bottles Collect $35 The Vernonia Runts- softball team now boasts the addition of new equipment for the team catcher because of money that was contributed to the bottles placed in business houses last week. The bottles were distributed by Mar vin Turner who issued a call for funds to finance the purchase of the equipment needed by the team. The Runts scored a loss and a win in their last two games. They met McMinnville there last Sat urday evening to lose 4-1, but recorded a win from Verboort here Sunday afternoon 9-4. The one Vernonia run of the McMinnville game was scored by Henry Bass. Most Logging Outfits To Close for Fourth MIST — Mr. and Mrs. Ira Renfro from the middle West were recent guests of the A. R. Melises. Mrs. Chas. Sundland went to McMinnville Wednesday to get her granddaughter, Sharon. Last week's guests of the Percy Bailletts were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Russell from Coos Bay. They remained nearly a week. Most of the log oulfits are closing down the last of the week for two weeks, and some longer, over the 4th holidays. Mrs. Geo. Kalessee’s little -rrard daughter is making her grandpar ents, the Kalasees a visit. Little Bobby Mathews had his tonsils removed Thursday, his parents taking him to Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Noble Dunlap are away on a trip to Utah to see their new grandchild and its par- ents. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Deeds, They expect to be back in a few days now.
