Unemployment Paymenti
Hit New High in March
Payments to Oregon’s unem
ployed during March reached $4,-
166,215, heaviest on record, but
claims last week dropped to 48,-
616, nearly 30 per cent under
the winter’s peak, the state un
employment compensation com
mission reports.
Workers covered by the state’s
unemployment law received $2,-
394,260, slighly less than in the
previous month and 17.1 per cent
under the all-time high of March
1946. Readjustment allowances to
out-of-work veterans increased to
$1,771,955, about 14 percent higher
than in February and "consideraby
above any other month since pay
ments started under the G.I. bill
of rights in September, 1944.
Lumber and logging plants
workers again were more than
40 per cent of the unemployed,
although the proportion decreased
slightly in recent weeks.

WORK BEGINS
WILLAMINA — Preliminary
work has started on a new grade
school for Willamina, with actual
excavation work getting under
way last week. Charles J. John
son of Portland was awarded the
contract on his bid of $155,817 for
the complete building.
The present grade school build
ing, which was built 40 years ago
to accomodate 150 children and
six teachers, is entirely inadequate
for the present enrollment of 440
students, 340 of whom attend
classes in the building, with 50
more taken care of in a two-room
quonset hut, and 50 in the base
ment of the Christian church.
DIALS TO COME
GARIBALDI — Enlargement of
the Garibaldi Telephone building
to make room for a new and larger
dial system, together with plans
for a new dial telephone office at
Netarts, was announced last week
by Em’l Broms, manager here for
The Pacific Telephone and Tele
graph Company.
Size of the Garibaldi building
will be virtually doubled with the
completion of a 12’xl4’ one story
addition, started last week, and the
new dial equipment will increase
the capacity of the office from 170
to roughly 300 telephones, accord
ing to Broms.
LAND FERTILIZED
WARRENTON — Fertlizing of
farm lands was accomplished Sat
urday and Sunday a week ago
by the Hilmstrom Aerial crop-dust
ing service of Astoria by Pilot
Dennis Thomnson. The crop-dust
ing nline with its hoppers filled
with nitrogen and phosphate fer
tilizer, covered more than 100
acres, including the J. O. Conville
farm in Warrenton.
17.000 ACRES SLUICED
MCMINNVILLE — Moderate to
severe soil losses occured on some
17,000 acres of sloping Yamhill
county agricultural lands this
winter, during one of the Willa
mette valley’s worst runoff peri
ods, a soil damage survey com
pleted by the Portland regional
office of the U. S. Soil Conserva
tion Service disclosed last week.
The 115,000 ton soil loss inven
toried in Yamhill county, repre
sented a good share of the million
plus tonnage washed from all
upland farms in the Willamette
basin highlands.
AERIAL TRAMWAY
SANDY — The aerial tramway
between Government Camp and
Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood
will be completed in approximately
90 to 120 days after work is re
sumed this spring, Dr. O. George,
president of the tramway corpora
tion has declared.
Dr. George said that work on
the tramway, expected to attract
tourists from throughout th’e
world, would get underway as
soon as weather conditions permit.
4-HClubs
Field Trip Taken
The Rock Creek Forestry club
field trip was held between 10
a.m. and 2 p.m. at Clint Seibert’s
place. Those present were: Mary
Ella Tipton, Betty Jo Tipton,
Laura Mae, Martyn, Rub/ and
Leland Seibert.
Crossing the river on saddle
horses the group carried all ne
cessary tools for planting the
Douglas fir trees. Cedar sticks
topped with white paint, were
used for marking the 200 trees.
One hundred sixty more Doug
las fir and 40 black locusts were
planted in the evenings of the
following weeks.
Taking turns, short work was
made of the tree planting job.
While one person was measuring
with a five-foot stick and stak
ing, another came behind, digging
holes for the one following, who
planted the tree. Spreadng the
the roots and crumbling the dirt
around them. The next proceedure
was to step on the dirt and mulch
with dead ferns. Turns were tak
en in measuring, digging and
planting.
Mary Ella and Betty Jo Tipton
took forty trees to plant at their
home.
A 60 per cent livability six
months from now is necessary to
show how many will produce
Christmas trees later.
These trees grow from one to
two feet a year. It has been
found that slow growing is best
for Christmas trees. This type of
tree may be planted four feet
apart, which gives about 2,742 an
acre. The club planted five feet,
which gives 1,742 an acre. To
qualfy for forest conservation
practices, only 400 trees an acre
must be maintained.
The crew of eight, including
Tiny the mascot, age five, planted
all the trees in three hours.
